My favorite part of Odom's vision
He stated that he wants USU to be a consistent top 25 team and advance in the tournament.
Not just contend for conference titles, not just win some games, but advance in the tournament. I like how he has set his sights higher. Only time will tell if this happens, but many coaches have won at USU. He may take this to the next level.

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
That is what I'm excited about. We have won a lot of conference titles both regular season and tournament. We have our share of great seasons and big wins. It is now time to take the next step and start winning in the dance. I believe the only coach who has beat a 1 seed as a 16 seed fits the bill to get us there.

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
I do think that nearly anyone we hired would have been able to continue the tradition of winning the majority of our regular season home game, as that's the easy part. The hard part is someone who is not content with JUST having a high winning percentage in home games, but also trying to get more 2019 LSU and Florida, 2018 St. Mary's type wins and start winning games in the tournament. I hear the talk of bringing back Spectrum Magic, and am thinking that we didn't need this big great hire for that, it's having more postseason success we needed the big great hire for.
In other words, I don't JUST want to see them keep winning in front of our 5000 students and 5000 fans on the other side. I also want to start seeing wins in front of crowds that have only a small section of fans of us along with fans of our opponent, fans of two other teams there for a game either before or after ours, along with fans of four other teams and local impartial fans scattered through the rest of the arena!

Other than him, the only other coach to win a game in the NCAA tournament is Stew Morrill in 2001.
Close calls (5 points or less) include Dutch Belnap and Rod Tueller's squads of:
1975 Round of 32 Montana L 63–68
1980 11 W Round of 48 (6) Clemson L 73–76
1983 10 MW Round of 48 (7) Iowa L 59–64
1988 10 MW Round of 64 (7) Vanderbilt L 77–80
And Stew Morrill's teams of:
2003 15 W Round of 64 (2) #6 Kansas L 61–64
2009 11 W Round of 64 (6) #23 Marquette L 57–58
2011 12 S Round of 64 (5) #21 Kansas State L 68–73

I am optimistic about Ryan Odom, because he has been both a HC and won conference and NCAA tournament games already. Only time will tell.

I did know that. He won in a 25 team tournament against UTEP and then Santa Clara. John Wooden's UCLA team took them out after. Supposedly Ladell Anderson said after that USU would likely never reach that far again. I read an article by Greg Hansen, a USU Alumnus when USU played Arizona in 2005 where he stated that.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 4:59 pmLaDell took us to the elite eight.NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 11:36 amWasn't born when he was here, but he did go 4-7 in the non-expanded tournament.mcaggie1 wrote: ↑April 7th, 2021, 11:10 pmNext level like Ladell Anderson?NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑April 7th, 2021, 10:01 pmHe stated that he wants USU to be a consistent top 25 team and advance in the tournament.

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
Great coach, but sucks he said something like that instead of "we'll be back here soon." He was right though. We haven't been close to the elite 8 since then. Our one tournament win was followed with a 25 point loss to Matt Barnes, Earl Watson and UCLA.NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 5:35 pmI did know that. Pretty much the same thing that Majerus said when he lost in the Finals. He knew that opportunity to get that far would never happen again. To his dying day he could recount, second by second, the last 6 minutes of that game.

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
That was quite a game. As a Utah hater I loved the ending, but it had to suck as a Utah fan seeing their chance to be champions slip away like that. They were up double digits at the half and controlled most of that game.
And yep, you never know when you will get back. You got to make the most of those moments. I remember after OKC losing to Miami everybody thought it was just a preview of things to come with a core group of Durant/Westbrook/Harden all age 23. Yet they never made it back and the team dissolved.

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
One of the few times I ever cheered for the University of Utah in my life. I remember watching their double digit halftime lead dissolve as Ron Mercer and the blue chips recruits from Kentucky started raining down 3's on the gassed Utes.
I have heard Britton Johnsen say on the radio that even to this day, hearing about that game affects him some. They were so close to beating Kentucky then it all slipped away.
Rick Majerus said after one of his Kentucky losses, "they have a bunch of McDonald's All Americans, and we have a bunch of kids that worked at McDonald's."

Re: My favorite part of Odom's vision
What you may not know is that after UCLA (who eventually won the tournament) beat us, John Wooden (UCLA’s legendary coach) said that they were lucky that USU’s Nate Williams had a bruised knee, and wasn’t 100%. He said if Williams would have been 100% USU would have beaten us, and probably won the whole thing.NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑April 8th, 2021, 5:35 pmI did know that.
