WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I know everyone wants to make the best of this but I am near devastated. I hate what we are doing and don't think there is any reason for it except that Benson wants to save his conference merely for his job. With TCU essentially gone to the Big East, why on earth would we not stand pat and let more chips fall. Adding 1-AA schools will always be an option, why rush into this? There's so much uncertainty - can anyone explain this?
At least I wanted to come to this site and read about others outrage with this, but I can't even find that. Give me some company, because I am miserable!!!

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
IF and/or WHEN TCU leaves the MWC , do we know for sure if MWC would expand and would USU get an invite? The other five schools left in 2012 WAC need to have a conference for them. Hawai'i has been rumored to go independent and LaTech may go to SunBelt or Conference USA but neither of those are for certain. If any school received an invite for "greener pastures" would they turn it down? USU did once; seen as honorable to others in WAC but if it happens again, I think we say yes. Should the WAC have waited to see what TCU is going to do? Maybe?
Do or do not...There is no try (Yoda)
Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I was born and raised in the State of Washington. I grew up loving the local sports. As you can imagine, when the NBA allowed the Sonics to leave it was gut-wrenching! The worst part? For me it was right before it went to court... City politicians decided to settle hours before the trial and took $45 million as a buyout of the Key Arena lease and the Oklahoma City Thunder began (we just got Kevin Durrant!!!). The politicians failed the fans. The only hope was with that lawsuit. They sold us and our franchise out for $45 million to the city. It may have been inevitable, but at least at the time there was hope.
This is the same thing all over again. Perhaps this is as best as we (the conference) could do. But in the process they killed all hope and "sold out" early, or "settled" before all the chips had fallen. Once again, I lose out on a potential better situation because apparently it was more important to GET TO A SOLUTION FAST! ALL HOPE GONE.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I am not at all excited about the Texas schools joining. I was frequently thinking along the same lines as you, too. But the thought occurred to me, if something does happen is there any reason we couldn't still take the opportunity? Granted, the Texas twins and Denver or whoever else was hoping to get in would be bummed, but it's not like they can't just go back to where they were before. We and the rest of the WAC-6, however, are struggling for survival and legitimacy. So, we send out the invites now, but without signing any kind of solidarity pact.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
One thing to remember, USU does not equal the WAC. The WAC has to do what it needs to do to remain viable for the future and it needs to do that independent from whatever USU chooses to do in the future.
The WAC had to do something to mitigate recent and potential future losses. They've done that. I don't know how it changes anything for USU. It certainly doesn't take away any of USU's options. In fact, it gives USU more options because it helps to ensure against future loss of the WAC. If the WAC was defunct and USU had no where to go... where would that leave USU? USU can still leave in the future.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
The problem with this news is that it does finally put to rest all of the notions that the WAC was going to rebuild in a way that was somewhat respectible from USU's standpoint. Until about three weeks ago, we couldn't log onto this board without hearing of suggestions and whispers that something surprising and favorable was going to happen within the WAC itself. Even Benson would hint at various other scenarios that would surprise everyone. Well, I guess that didn't pan out.brownjeans wrote:One thing to remember, USU does not equal the WAC. Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
Yeah, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I think the notions that MWC schools might jump to the WAC were pretty unrealistic and too dependent on things outside anyone's control. I think it's more likely that a few schools from each conference leave both the WAC and the MWC and create a new conference that's free of the burdens of bad programs and bad TV contract. There will still be changes and those changes may or may not involve USU. But if the WAC isn't dead then at least it provides a safety net for USU should nothing work out for them. This is better than winding up with no home again.dogie wrote:The problem with this news is that it does finally put to rest all of the notions that the WAC was going to rebuild in a way that was somewhat respectable from USU's standpoint. Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
Another thing to note is that Benson and the presidents are receiving huge pressure from the football coaches in the league to stabilize membership asap in the face of negative recruiting about whether or not the WAC will even exist.

I look at it this way. San Antonio gives us another Bowl. And besides, how many of you would rather go to Boise for a Bowl game or San Antonio? To me this is a no brainer. Benson sees that yes, we get UtSA in the WAC, but more importantly we get a Bowl game in better Weather and bigger City San Antone!

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I'm not going to complain about inviting UTSA, or Texas State, or even any other school that plays football, since schools have the potential to improve in football even if they are not good at the moment.
But I am against inviting any schools that do not play football. We should only invited footall playing schools.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
What am I missing? Is San Antonio going to create a new bowl game which is tied into the WAC? The Alamo Bowl just created a new agreement, and it's between the PAC 10 and Big 12. That won't change.troutputz wrote:I look at it this way. San Antonio gives us another Bowl. And besides, how many of you would rather go to Boise for a Bowl game or San Antonio? The WAC's tie-ins to bowl games aren't looking good. The New Mexico Bowl just announced it's dropping the WAC in 2012 and going to a MWC-Pac 12 matchup. The bowls in Boise and Hawaii are on shaky ground in that both will probably follow where each of its home teams go (I wouldn't be surprised if the bowl game in Boise just goes away). What does that leave as a certainty? Two bowl games in two years for the WAC? Emerald and Poinsetta?

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I believe that the WAC is proceeding with the thought that maybe more schools will leave as changes continue to take place in the Big Six Conferences. Will USU be a part of that change. I think the chances are pretty good, but not great. I think that Hawaii will go independent with all other sports in the Big West. So the WAC is just preparing for the possible future loses it might face. They have to prepare for the 20112-13 conference season.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I for one am happy. My aggies are on stable ground now with a secure confrence. All I care about is that USU stays FBS and that I can watch them on Saturdays. I do not see this move any different when both Boise and Reno were brought up not so long ago. We will hear reactions that people do not get excited to go watch USU vs. Texas State. I don't know about you guys but I go to the games to watch the aggies not the other team. Like this year when someone asked me if I was going to the BYU game. I said no I am going to the USU game and they are playing BYU. Nothing to me is better than a Saturday afternoon at Romney. Now that I still might be able to share the experience with my children is a huge positive.

Thank you! Stability is key here folks. We NEED to recruit and maintain any momentum we hope to have. If we are worthy and the opportunity presents itself, we will have option of moving on, but until that day comes, we have to be the top dog in our current conference (something we've not been in a LONG time).
I have been stating on the other board for months now that BSU and UNR were not unlike these new Texas schools not that long ago (15 years at most?), the only difference being Boise and Reno are not in Texas and don't have close to the markets of San Antonio, Denver and Seattle (I'm hoping). Further, UTSA is the ONLY FB show in that FB-hungry town now. Let's not get confused saying UTSA is to Texas as USU is to Utah. While USU may or may not deliver a significant percentage of the Utah market (I'd argue they deliver more than many believe), San Antonio is an untapped FB market. Someone please tell me they can't AT LEAST be as significant as a similarly funded (and BTW, smaller) Texas school in El Paso. Again, see South Florida.
Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
It used to be WAC > MAC or Sunbelt. Now it is WAC = MAC or Sunbelt. This makes me real excited, look how much publicity and excitment the MAC or Sunbelt garners. But when you sit back and look at it what are you going to do? I sure hope that the behind the scenes talk of the new conference being formed comes to fruition.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I don't like it. I'm really disappointed that the Aggies are once again back in "conference re-building" mode. We were just barely getting our feet under ourselves after 10 years of complete instability. Now we're back in the uncertainty of "How many bowls? What TV contract? Who is gonna be our rival now?"
The problem is that there is no alternative to what we've just done. No one else wants to come to our party. Don't forget, we were never invited to the MWC. They only asked if we had interest in talking about joining. We certainly could have played our cards better in that game. But just because our president doesn't have a good poker face doesn't mean he's not smart and can't figure out something else. So we make the best of our situation, continue to invest in the programs we can, and compete our way to the top and to a better position down the road.
What I'm deathly afraid of is that we're going to lose our AD or university leadership to a more upwardly-mobile institution and what little progress we've made in the last 10 years will be completely washed away. We never seem to have a back-up plan.

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
I think it should be noted Cache Valley is very small, population and market size, for a competitive D-1 football program. One of the smallest out there. On top of that, we haven't had a winning program. We should be happy we're where we are. We went from Big West, to Sunbelt, to Independent, to finally making the WAC. Even the new WAC is well above what we had before, and things will get better as these new teams progress.
UTSA is a great move. Texas State...eh they'll do. Denver and Seattle is just plain stupid but oh well.
I just don't get why we didn't add Portland St. and/or Sacramento St. Big markets that have no current pro or college football teams.
I also think the MWC is in the future with the current Utah market gone, and TCU probably leaving. With BYU and TCU, the MWC probably could have cherry picked from C-USA. Without those teams, C-USA is probably a better conference and teams in it probably wouldn't leave for MWC. That leaves USU looking like a pretty tempting pick up.

So Sizzle, you don't think USU gathers any of the SLC market? Because I think they do and it will increase as the football program improves. I don't understand USU fans that want to sell the USU market short limiting it to just Cache Valley.

I think the WAC invited pretty much every D-1 school to express interest. We don't know if PSU and Sac State did. We can't "add" teams that don't want to come.UtahStizzle wrote:***

Re: WAC??? Where's the outrage??????
Gus, there definitely is a market for USU throughout the Wasatch Front. I'm just looking at metro sizes. And if you look at metro size numbers, you'll notice the trend with football, is the bigger the better. Other sports such as basketball have more parity. But with football it's really all about talent, and the larger your market, the more talent you can get. Only Wyoming of the MWC has a smaller metro size than we do. Ft. Collins (CSU) is twice as big as Cache Valley, and they're on the small end of the conference too. The area is growing tremendously, but many times I think USU fans have unrealistic expectations.
Okaggie, Sac State seemed interested: http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/sp ... 002e0.html
I remember the WAC originally mentioned both Sac St. and Portland St. as potential teams in the summer, and then never heard anything about it again, for good or bad. Perhaps it was a feasibility thing with the schools.
