Sammy is IN!
Clean up minutes in a playoff game, still pretty cool for a first year rookie.

Sam now has officially scored more points in the playoffs than that Jimmer Fredette tool.

Re: Sammy is IN!
The last NBA player was Desmond Penigar who played on a 10 day contract for the Orlando Magic. No playoffs. Before that it was Nate Williams in the late 70's. Never got a chance at the playoffs though.
I did some research and the last time a USU player scored in the NBA playoffs was Shalier Halimon with 2 points, who played for the Philadelphia 76ers on March 28, 1969 in a game 2 blowout loss to the Boston Celtics.

Re: Sammy is IN!
Bert Cook actually has the record of scoring 8 points for the New York Knicks on March 15, 1955 in a 21 point loss to the Boston Celtics. As near as I can tell, Sam Merrill is only the 3rd USU player to ever score in the playoffs.Aggie formerly in Hawaii wrote: ↑May 25th, 2021, 9:38 amWow, that is kind of sad.NowhereLandAggie wrote: ↑May 25th, 2021, 9:17 amThe last NBA player was Desmond Penigar who played on a 10 day contract for the Orlando Magic. Wayne Estes likely would have if he had not been killed and drafted, but other than that, the pickings are pretty slim.

Oh hey, let's just say I'm glad the Aggies were good when I was in school. The football team was atrocious during those years and let's just say the mood of your date after going to a basketball game was much better than after a football game.

Didn't realize we had such few players ever score in the playoffs.

Re: Sammy is IN!
Although I recognize that this thread is referencing the NBA it is worth noting that perhaps the greatest former Aggie in an American professional basketball league could well be Marv Roberts. He was in the ABA but at a time where the ABA was close enough to the NBA in credibility that they merged.
Marv played for six years in the ABA/NBA including an ABA championship with the Kentucky Colonels. He finished with the LA Lakers.
Wikipedia shows that he scored over 200 points in the ABA playoffs.

I will not be the last. Sam Merril will be a regular rotation player (or better) in a year or two. Mark it down.

Love seeing Merrill in, but gross seeing him share the court with Elijah Bryant.

And the call by Marv Albert was he is out of Brigham Young. I threw a couple of f bombs at the TV when I heard that.

Re: Sammy is IN!
I thought that too but when I watched it back, I think he was still talking about Bryant who had just made the basket prior to Sam’s play. It was confusing in real time but I don’t think he was talking about Sam when he said that.ChicagoAggie wrote: ↑May 27th, 2021, 8:14 pmAnd the call by Marv Albert was he is out of Brigham Young. How long has Bryant been on the team and where and why did they get him? I thought the Bucks wete pretty loaded at the guard/wing position?

Re: Sammy is IN!
They signed him right before the end of the regular season from overseas if I remember right. I don't think he played any regular season games. He's definitely trying to prove himself out there. He took 3 shots in 4 minutes of play. Nwora was the only one jacking it up at a higher rate taking 4 shots in 5 minutes. Sam had a nice assist that didn't quite pan out and was open on a few 3 opportunities but his teammates weren't looking to pass. Took the charge and got a steal.

Re: Sammy is IN!
I imagine Forbes or Connaughton will move into the starting spot with the other getting the majority of the back-up minutes. It is likely that Sam may get a few more minutes as well though. Bryant is playing well and may get some more as well but he seems to be more of the PG back-up along with Teague.
