Re: any news on the decibel meter?
From what I understood talking to Ry yesterday they still need to fix some sort of "box" up in the roof of the Spectrum to make the connections fit properly again. Something like that. We're closer to having them back than ever before!

Thanks for the update isrred. Tell Ry Bay that I will personally buy him dinner when in town if he gets that thing running.isrred wrote:From what I understood talking to Ry yesterday they still need to fix some sort of "box" up in the roof of the Spectrum to make the connections fit properly again. Well they can't even get our scoreboard to work ...so I'm not too optimistic.

It's sitting in the Sig Ep house currently, although the guy who is trying to fix it didn't sound too optimistic but he is working hard on it. I'll keep you guys updated if I hear anything

Dang....thanks for the update MJA, but this news upsets me. What is going on with the electronics in the Spectrum? Disappointing.

Is it just me, or do the colors of the weights, coupled with the colors of the t-shirts, make that gym look a little like a daycare?

Love it Jason!
I see you've increased to the 10 lb weights. Nice!

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
I'll be honest. I probably could have done a better job putting the scoreboard in. I didn't want to spend more than 5 minutes on it though...and what's wrong with having an overly large video screen?NVAggie wrote:I'm just going to say it, there are som proportion issues with your pic Jason.

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, I think you are in the wrong thread....................
Re: any news on the decibel meter?
Sorry gang. still working on it. Its ridiculous. We've made it farther than anyone so far. We're pretty sure we know how it works now we just have to figure out where the controller box is. I'm working on it more next week.

Once you're done with that, will you take care of the scoreboard as well.

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
I don't know if the person working on this has a background in electronics (so excuse my ignorance), but as a graduate of USU electrical engineering, here is my $0.02:
1) Contact a professor in ECE and ask if they could get students to fix it as a class project. Almost all of the higher level classes have a final project and this would fit. Any group of students could easily do this, even if they have to reverse engineer the control signals to the display portion. They would probably replace whatever runs the display now with a Arduino or other cheap/easy to use microcontroller with an area for completing a audio decibal meter circuit.
2) The circuit for a audio decibal meter really is not complicated. It is basically a microphone and a series of amplifiers. The hard part to have a "very accurate" meter is a calibration. The thing is that the meter doesn't have to be exactly correct. As long as the numbers go up the louder the crowd gets, it will serve its purpose. The effect is more psychological than scientific. That being said, to be able to accurately say "I was there the day the decibal meter hit 165", it would be nice to know it is accurate.
3) Even building a new one from scratch (assuming students do it and don't get paid) would probably be under $300.
$150 - three 12 inch 7 segment displays
$50 - a microcontroller board and other circuitry
$50 - an enclosure
As an end note, I really think that the decibal meter has the desired psychological effect and me and my friends used to work hard to drive it as high as possible.

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
Sounds like a heck of an idea to me. What are the chances of the decibel meter being up and running for the BYU game? I couldn't agree more that that thing will drive up the noise even more to insane amounts. I'm already counting down the days for that game, not only the excitement of the game but for the environment of the spectrum as well!

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
I just emailed two professors I keep in touch with to see if they know of any upper-classmen (or women) who might be willing to spend some time in the lab with the meter, either for a class or out of the goodness of their hearts. On of the professors actually does a lot of work with audio and music analysis, so he probably already has the appropriate equipment to calibrate the decibel meter properly.

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
Why can't we have a student intern sit down with the press on the west side close to the floor with one of these. ]

All she or he would have to do is manually enter the changing levels until we get something figured out.

It's quite a ghetto solutions, but who cares.

Re: any news on the decibel meter?
The problem isn't the sign its that there's a controller somewhere and we don't know where it is. We've made more progress than anyone. I'm not giving up and we've got some brilliant kids helping out so I'm almost certain we can get it fixed.
