SALT LAKE CITY — Utah State senior guard Sam Merrill added another honor Tuesday to a long list of career accolades. 

The Aggies’ sharpshooter was named a Senior CLASS first-team All-American, the organization announced. It’s the first time Merrill has earned a first-team All-America citation in his career, after being named a third-team All-American by Stadium following his junior season.

Merrill, who was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection the past two seasons, was also named the MW Tournament MVP the last two years. In addition to excellence on the court, the Senior CLASS award, an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, recognizes student-athletes who make a positive impact as community leaders.

Merrill led USU by averaging 19.7 points per game this season, while also becoming the fourth player in school history to surpass the 2,000-career points mark (finishing with 2,197). Merrill scored in double-figures in every game but one during the 2019-20 season.

The Bountiful High product also averaged 3.9 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game while helping the Aggies finish the season with a 26-8 record and their second straight MW Tournament championship.
