Who will come out on top?

Mountain West Wire’s 2021 preseason honors:

All-Conference Teams | Offensive Player of the Year | Defensive Player of the Year | Special Teams Player of the Year | Freshmen of the Year | Newcomer of the Year | Coach of the Year | Coordinator of the Year

When it comes to making Mountain West football predictions, some things never change but, thankfully, other things do.

For the first time in our four years of making projections at Mountain West Wire, our staff predicts that the Nevada Wolf Pack will emerge from what looks like a very strong West division. In the Mountain, we predict business as usual with the Boise State Broncos claiming yet another division crown.

Order of Finish

West Division

Nevada – 59 points (seven first-place votes)
Fresno State – 50 points (two first-place votes)
San Jose State – 48 points (two first-place votes)
San Diego State – 39 points
Hawaii – 23 points
UNLV – 12 points

About the only thing that’s clear as a result of our vote, though, is that whoever emerges from the West will have definitely earned it. The Nevada Wolf Pack aren’t quite a clear-cut favorite as, like last year, two other teams earned at least one first-place vote.

Mountain Division

Boise State – 64 points (nine first-place votes)
Wyoming – 55 points (two first-place votes)
Air Force – 40 points
Colorado State – 27 points
Utah State – 26 points
New Mexico – 19 points

The Broncos, on the other hand, got much closer to consensus but will have plenty to contend with in their own division play. Like last year, we project that the Wyoming Cowboys will be the team most likely to be right behind them as the Pokes bring back nearly everyone from 2020.
