Gensel Gone
Greg Gensel, the head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach is no longer at USU. Considering it's midseason for the team and how long he's been at USU, this is very fascinating.

The rumor is that it's a forced retirement. Curious. I have NO knowledge of the situation but can only think of 2 of 3 things that cause that.

Re: Gensel Gone
Interesting. I was a track team manager my freshman year about a decade ago. Really liked working with Coach Gensel.
Im not very close to the team at all now so my know how is very off base, but Id love to see USU bring back Corey Murdock. I believe he's an asst at the Y now. Seemed like a great player coach in my time interacting with him and has a lot of passion for USU. Again, there are certainly better perspectives on this than me. Really interested to see what comes of this.

Corey has no knowledge of distance, but I guess Gensel didn't either. Cory was a grad hurdler coach when he was with USU.TheSauerkrautKid wrote:Interesting. I was a track team manager my freshman year about a decade ago. Really liked working with Coach Gensel.

Re: Gensel Gone
I’m not sure what he is doing now, but ricks: provo fired their coach a few years ago, which meant Murdock was set free. Pretty sure he got inducted into the USU hall of fame right around the same time. He was back in Logan a couple of years ago when I last saw him (at Aggie Ice Cream, no less).TheSauerkrautKid wrote:Interesting. I was a track team manager my freshman year about a decade ago. Re: Gensel Gone
Before we all go off the deep end with innuendo, maybe the more likely scenarios should be posited first. I ran track for the guy and was honored to have him as my bishop at one point. He's older, has a wife close to that age, and is very devoted to his religion. I would put my guesses at health problems in the family or with the coach himself, or maybe a mission call or something of the sort. I'm sure I can find out, but I honestly think he's the last guy who would get forced out over scandal. I can tell you right now there's nothing criminal that I've heard of.

Usually a mid season, or sudden termination/resignation is very big news, even for minor sports. For a guy who has been a successful coach for such a long time (my roommate was on the track team in 1993 and Gensel was his coach), to suddenly be gone without any mention whatsoever, no news release or statement of any sort, seems very suspicious. Are we sure this is even real? Gensel is still listed as the cross country coach on the athletics website.

How and why has this been kept quiet? Usually this would be big news. Why is he still listed as the coach on the website? It all seems very weird.AGGIEFIGHT wrote:it is real- Greg was blindsided by this- i hope they pay him the duration of his contact and not try to weasel there way out of it

Re: Gensel Gone
That is true, but usually the media is not that far behind. This was posted on Monday, it is now Thursday, and according to all publicly available material from the University itself, Gensel is still the coach. So either it did not happen, or there is a big reason the University is keeping quiet about it. Usually keeping quiet about it is not a good sign.TheAKAggie wrote:This board breaks more Aggie stories than The Tribune, HJ news and Cache Valley Dailey combined.

Re: Gensel Gone
Can confirm that he is currently on leave from the program. No reason has been given, even to those athletes within the program. They held a short meeting to let the athletes know that he was not going to be coaching anymore (at least for the near future), but have kept it very under wraps.
Re: Gensel Gone
IMO, organizations move this manner under two general cases. The first being some major criminal/civil investigation is underway. The second being the organization has decided to make a move that has no real justification/is not popular and they are slow playing to dampen the reaction.swordsman1989 wrote:That is true, but usually the media is not that far behind. Re: Gensel Gone
I will confirm that Greg has been put on paid administrative leave. I don't know the reasons for this. I only hope the University
pays him what is left on his contract and not try to get out of it. He has won more conference championships than the other olympic sports combined
I do not know another coach who has put in as much time ,energy, and his own money to help build his facilities and program than Greg. The new cross country course was all his doing. He has been an aggie thru and thru for the past 25 years and the university needs to treat him right

Re: Gensel Gone
Any update on this? The website still shows him as the coach. I know it is not always updated, but it was updated in August with the new assistant gymnastics coaches.
Like I said before, my roommate at USU was on the track team and he always spoke quite highly of coach Gensel, so I am a bit interested.

Re: Gensel Gone
Speaking with personal knowledge of the situation, I can confirm that Coach Gensel was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Apparently there were some allegations of unfair treatment of some athletes over others. I don't have the details but it does come across as suspect to me to take action now given that Gensel would be eligible for full retirement(turns 62) at the end of this month (and going into his 30th year as head coach, with 6 as assistant before that. He was a distance runner under Coach Maughn as student in the 70s). He is among the winningest and most accomplished coaches in USU history, and I hope USU/Athletics don't think they can push him out without some pushback.
A final decision has not been issued, but I think "forced retirement" seems like an accurate description of what's in the works. If you have an opinion about it...let the AD, Assistant AD, President of the University and USU attorney know.
