Re: Who are the finalists?
I guess Baldwin would be my second choice after Hill, CAL's offense has been HORRIBLE this year though. The problem is with the exception of Hill and Maile, those guys will all have one foot out of door.Madmartigan wrote: ↑December 7th, 2018, 1:47 pmNo love for Baldwin? Mark Helfrich
Beau Baldwin
Jay Hill
Mike Yurcich
Frank Maile
I have a bad feeling Hartwell is gonna screw this up.

Re: Who are the finalists?
Only 2 of 5 have any chance of being here beyond 3 years and that’s Hill and Maile. The rest will either ride the wave of success and leave in 2-3 years or they’ll fail because they won’t follow the formula and be fired in 3 years.
Very disappointed if it’s not Hill now that Gary is out. Im

I don't really care who it is. I want someone that makes it happen right off the bat. This team has talent and there should be no drop off.

Re: Who are the finalists?
Hard to believe the reason he would withdraw is because of a lukewarm response but if that’s the case, it sure doesn’t appear that he really wants the job. If he just has a take it or leave it attitude (in other words, I’m fine where I am so this job doesn’t really matter to me), we’re better off with someone else.

Unless he was doing us a favor by returning and then felt his offer to coach wasn’t appreciated. So instead he’ll wait until Hartwell is gone maybe.bluegrouse wrote: ↑December 7th, 2018, 2:08 pmHard to believe the reason he would withdraw is because of a lukewarm response but if that’s the case, it sure doesn’t appear that he really wants the job. Re: Who are the finalists?
Same here. We need someone who can build upon what we have while maintaining our 3 pillar recruiting philosophy that has been proven to work. If Hartwell goes in a completely different direction we will take a big step back imo.2004AG wrote: ↑December 7th, 2018, 2:03 pmWell said Hipster. If it is him we won't be seeing an announcement tonight. They play their quarterfinal game tonight at 6pm. It's on ESPN2. I know I'm going to give it a watch!

Confused. What is slim to none? Getting Jay Hill or getting Jay Hill and keeping the other guys?

Re: Who are the finalists?
So, should we:
A) Be cheering that Weber loses tonight so we can get the Hill deal done ASAP and he can get focused 100% on all things USU?
OR
B) Be pulling for the Wildcats to win tonight and keep marching through the FCS playoffs. If we do hire him he won’t be entirely available for a few weeks but will come with a little more luster when he does come?

Would love Jay Hill as the choice, would hate Helfrich as the choice, would be afraid but hopeful with a choice of Maile, Baldwin, or Yurcich.

Helfrich would also be my last choice as well.

Re: Who are the finalists?
Eww. That list makes me gag. I would take GA over any of them in a heart beat. I think Hartwell was rather set on NOT hiring GA. I think that is dumb, especially since he knows the program and I think he would stick around. Really don't want to have to be trying to find another new coach in a couple of years.

I'm confident it will not be Jay Hill, not even sure we'll even interview him. But what do I know?ineptimusprime wrote: ↑December 7th, 2018, 3:21 pmConfused. What is slim to none? Getting Jay Hill or getting Jay Hill and keeping the other guys?

Re: Who are the finalists?
after we fired BG we ended up giving a courtesy interview to JLS as I recall. It didn't go too well. JLS thought we should have been begging for him to return because he was so "successful" here. Well sometimes that attitude wont get you very far, and then you end up finishing up your career at some Podunk DII school that fires you for being a loser.@ggies wrote: ↑December 7th, 2018, 3:44 pmEww. I hope the best for GA though, he seems like a good guy and I always liked him. BUT with that said, I don't think he's the right fit for us now. Things change.

Re: Who are the finalists?
I'm a little surprised at the responses to Helfrich being a possible candidate. I understand his last year at Oregon was bad, but he had some really good teams and results prior to that. I mean the dude took the Ducks to the national championship game in his second year. They beat an undefeated Florida State team in the CFP- Semi final and then lost to Urban's Ohio State team in the national championship game. That Buckeye team had 16 NFL draft picks in the starting lineup (6 of them were 1st rounders). The Ducks were even in that game up until the 4th quarter. Sure he inherited a lot of Chip Kelly's players but he had to guide them and keep that success going. He basically molded Mariota as Helfrich was OC and QB coach there before he was HC. He has a tone of experience coaching good QB's and could be great for Jordan Love. Even his first and third years at Oregon were decent (finished 9th and 19th respectively in the AP poll). I'm not sure what happened in year 4 but the wheels did definitely fall off. Hartwell would need to look into what happened there. I'm not sure when we'll ever get another opportunity to hire a coach that lead a team to a #2 ranking, Rose Bowl victory, and championship game appearance less than 4 years earlier. Heck maybe Helfrich hires Chip Kelly as our OC after next season when he gets axed at UCLA.
For the record I would support Jay Hill and think he'd be a good fit.
Yurcich is interesting but not having any HC experience at any level is a bit concerning. His Ok State offenses have been fun to watch though and I don't think we'd see any offensive drop-off from this season. He's proven to be an effective OC in a big conference and sustained it for a longer period. I think he's a better candidate than Yost would be.
I want Maile to stay on staff, maybe even as DC, or at least D-Line coach and associate head coach or something like that. Not sure he's quite ready for HC. Maybe Maile gets the HC job in 3-4 years after we make a NY6 bowl and Helfrich leaves or Hill goes to Utah.
Beau Baldwin would be my last choice
