I agree. We could not stop Love. I wasn’t convinced we could get 2 first downs and kill the clock. The onside kick recovery and return was huge. Too early for that with 3 timeouts but maybe the coaches felt the D for USU couldn’t get off the field. Who knows.

Re: To me the onside kick was fatal
Bright’s fumble was the nail in the coffin because it was a forgone conclusion at that point the D couldn’t stop a drive. Kent states earlier fumble I think may have been the only ‘stop’ the D had in the 4th..... Anyway, once Kent went up by 2 scores it was over. The onside kick was USU’s Obi Wan Kenobi at that point.

I could tell at the first of the game that it was over. Sad ending to a disappointing season.

Re: To me the onside kick was fatal
The onside kick was stupid and I've been one of Stacy Collins biggest supporters. I seemed to me like we couldn't make a damn decision what to do so we did everything half way. We over kicked an onside kick and under kicked a full fledged kickoff. The result was a game clinching error in favor of Kent State.
3 minutes left kick it deep and take your chances on stopping them. If you're successful chances are you end up with decent field position. If your onside kick fails, you've now voluntarily give up between 20 to 30 yards of field position, yet you are still hoping for the same result, a three and out and extending the game by using your three timeouts.

Yea, that was a strange decision at the end. Our special teams aren't really that good where you put the "game" on them. How many missed game winners and how many returns against us? I didn't like that onside kick decision but we made 4 other turnovers during the game that were all equally bad......so it sucks but it wasn't the game IMHO

Re: To me the onside kick was fatal
hickaggie I like most of everything you write. But this time IMO you are wrong. We had 3 timeouts left, over 2 minutes plus on the clock(almost 3) , and guys named Mariner and more importantly our fastest guy Thompkins to run down field. I feel the odds were way more in our favor with a deep kick and making a defensive stop than to recover an onside kick. Watching Russell Wilson, Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers win games all the time with less than 2 minutes on the clock with a few timeouts left happens quite a bit. Love, in the College game is just as capable to do the same, as opposed to hoping to recover an onside kick the way that crazy shaped ball bounces. Just my feelings when I saw the poorly kicked onside kick that gave us no chance. None whatsoever. JMO

It would have been the same result. Third down the QB would have pulled the ball and still been running. It was onside kick or bust. Only thing our kicker is bad at apparently.

Not same result, QB ran on 4th down, if they are their own 34 they punt on 4th and 1, not go for it. Of course all the plays would have been different.

He would have pulled the ball on 3rd down and still been running. The Aggies had no one assigned to him. They weren't stopping anyone. Onside was right call.Coloraggie wrote: ↑December 24th, 2019, 6:47 pmNot same result, QB ran on 4th down, if they are their own 34 they punt on 4th and 1, not go for it.
