USU's Guaranteed MWC Opponents

Post by 3rdGenAggie » July 14th, 2022, 2:07 pm

SDSU and Boise.

MWC really doesn't want USU winning the league again in the next few years.

Or they just think that these are now the premier programs in the conference. :)

I had that one called from jump. They'll try and learn us a thing or two about winning a title we weren't supposed to win.

During the three-year cycle, all teams will face nine of the 11 opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and two opponents in each of the three years. The two opponents Utah State will face in each of the next three seasons are Boise State and San Diego State as the Aggies will host the Broncos twice and the Aztecs once.

During the 2023 campaign, Utah State will host Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and Nevada, and play at Air Force, New Mexico, San Diego State and San José State.

In 2024, USU will host Hawai’i, New Mexico, Wyoming and San Diego State, and play at Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada and UNLV.

And during the 2025 season, Utah State will host Air Force, Boise State, San José State and UNLV, and play at Fresno State, Hawai’i, San Diego State and Wyoming.

Honestly I had hoped it would be these two, didn't think it would be. Beat the top, to be the top. Maybe there are nefarious reasons, but that's OK, our schedule is better because of it and when when win, no excuses from bsu or sdsu (sans a bunch of TE injuries)

Or a compliment that we are playing the other two top programs in the MW. I don't understand the "they're out to get us" attitude from the majority of the board regarding the MW. What evidence for that is there? I can see a lot of reasons they'd slot us against Boise and SDSU besides trying to screw us out of a title shot.

I prefer that. I'd rather have more exciting games. If we can't beat them, we really don't deserve to be conference champs, I think.

Agree 100%! Everyone else stop your damned whining. You wanna be the best, you gotta beat the best. If we should win a title with New Mexico and UNLV as our guaranteed games, we'd never hear the end of it. If we should win one by beating the Donks and Aztecs instead, there will be no doubt.

Isn't this why we as fans wanted into the MWC? To play the best teams in our region? I'm thrilled with this. Most of you children don't remember when Boise was in the Big Sky, and they moved up to D-1A (as it was known at the time) to join us in the Big West. It's galled me how quickly they caught and passed us, and how much distance they've put between us. I'm ready to see that turned around, and I think we're on the cusp of doing it. You can't turn it around by beating New Mexico and UNLV.

Plus: we get Boise, by far the best drawing opponent in the MWC, in the Mav twice in the three year cycle, and all the other ten once each. Best outcome for ticket sales.

(Having finished my rant, I'm surprised by the announcement. I imagined they'd draw a connect-the-dots circle around the 12 teams, and have the guaranteed opponents be the ones on your left and right. Thought we'd get Boise and Wyoming, Boise would get us and Nevada, Wyoming would get us and CSU, CSU would get Wyoming and AFA (they did), and so on around the circle. My opinion wasn't solicited.)

Looks like they tried to stay geographic for some schools.

AFA, CSU, WYO all have a round robin, with those three as the only guaranteed opponents.
Fresno with Nevada, SJSU.
Nevada with Fresno, UNLV.
USU/Boise is a "regional" game, and I guess you could say SDSU/Hawaii is the closest geographical game for Hawaii. Hawaii/UNLV is also "closer" for Hawaii than most other schools.

Games that had to jump other schools to make the matchup:
SJSU/UNM
Boise/UNM
USU/SDSU

I imagine it's hard to do everything geographically in a conference as spread out as the MWC. It's an interesting puzzle, for sure. At least this way we won't have to hear all of the "USU backed their way into the championship game" comments after we beat BSU and SDSU on our way to a 4-peat. :cool2:

Sad we didn't get a Wyoming. I figured it was a guarantee given the fact that we have a named trophy rivalry game with them. I figured wrong.

We have by far the toughest draw of anyone in the league and it's not close.

No clue how Boise didn't draw SDSU. And Fresno avoided all three of us.... The three teams who have won the title the most over the last decade didn't draw each other at all. Makes very little sense to me to be honest.

Boise makes sense. It is a little weird that we didn't get Wyoming or CSU. They seem like bigger rivals. I'm also surprised that Boise didn't get SDSU or Fresno. Oh well, they will make for some exciting games with a lot of interest. Win this an nobody can say anything.

Yeah, I'm reading this this as an effort to preserve as many rivalries as possible while offering the best match ups of top teams for TV. A case could be made for USU, BSU and SDSU being the premier programs and therefore wanting to ensure they play one another. Of course SDSU fans will cry that they should be playing Fresno St. and Hawaii or UNLV but it's time for them to step out of the comfy protective shell formerly known as the West Division and play a tougher conference schedule.

It's also funny that the fans of practically every MWC school claim to be BSU's rival and they can't believe their particular match up isn't being preserved by the scheduling. haha....

Boise is the big dog, or has been to date, the big dog, in the MWC. Times change and prestige ebbs, but for now Boise is the Football target in the MWC. The Broncos are naturally the targeted focus of all other teams in the MWC, including us AGGIES.

With a few seasons of Championship Football play we should become the gridiron target, as we certainly will be marked this season.

Boise’s other guaranteed opponent is not only NOT from the western part of the division, but it is mother fu€k!Ng New Mexico?? If this isn’t the most blatant form of posturing, I don’t know what is.

Money has killed this game.

I’d rather they do what the conference has obviously set them up to do and win a coveted spot in the NY6 every single year if it means they fall flat on their face on the National stage.

I could buy that, but then why wouldn't they play each other? Instead they each play Utah State and a cupcake with no ties to their programs. I would've felt much better if USU/BSU/SDSU were in a round robin like CSU/AFA/WYO.
Of course SDSU fans will cry that they should be playing Fresno St.
They should be. And we should probably be playing Wyoming / BSU or Wyoming/CSU. :noidea: It's a legit argument.

As stated before, we have FAR AND AWAY the toughest schedule of any team out there. We're facing off against perennial division champions every year.

Let's be honest, the conference believes in their hearts that they have just handed us two guaranteed losses each year for the next year. I can't wait to see how the referees treat us.

Aggies fans, circa 2012: Wow, the WAC is really going to hell. I wish we could get into the Mountain West and play some decent teams.

Aggies fans, 2022: The Mountain West is making us play decent teams! What do they have against us?
Don’t disagree, but we’ve never gotten there on our own. We needed AF and CSU’s help both times we made it to the title game. We’ve never gotten there by beating Boise.

You can beat your chest all you want, but history, money, and recruiting classes would tell you we got the biggest shaft in this re-org. God speed, Aggies. Do us proud.

Can some numbers guys create some sort of SOS metric for each year based on team rankings of the last 5 years (or so), to get some quantitative assessment? I’ve seen y’all rank the fball teams. I’d assume it’d be rather straightforward for you geniuses.

This is the worst idea the Mountain West leadership has possibly ever had.
I'll bet Boise doesn't think so.
