Re: Bigger Upset: USU Beats Bama or Miracle on Ice?
Not an “old timer” so sorry if I’m butting in.
The miracle on ice still had great US hockey players that made it to that game.
I think a lot of the aura around it is just as political. The game was more meaningful but i think USU vs Bama is a bigger upset.
If the US would only win 1 out of 10 times.
I think USU be lucky to win 1 out of 30.

Tough call -- a bunch of college kids playing hockey against professionals versus a bunch of college kids playing football against professionals labeled as college kids for tax purposes. I'm not sure.

I will say this. If the Aggies pull off the shocker there will probably be a movie made about it.

If we are a borderline top 25 team like I’ve heard on here, then miracle on ice.

I think you’re missing the point. It wasn’t an actual prediction of any odds. It was a play off of a Herb Brooks quote.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 8:05 pm1 out of 30?Imakeitrain wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 5:57 pmNot an “old timer” so sorry if I’m butting in.

Miracle on Ice.
The USSR was not only professionals but had been playing and practicing together for years. They were the best in the world.
Team USA was not only amateurs, true college players, but selected and thrown together just a few months before the Olympics.

Re: Bigger Upset: USU Beats Bama or Miracle on Ice?
Miracle on Ice for sure! USSR had easily beaten an NHL All-Star team that had 20 future Hall of Famers in a 3 game series, and team USA, 10-3, shortly before the Miracle on Ice. They had won every gold medal since 1964 (1964, 1968, 1972, 1976) and were heavily favored to win 1980 as well. Its comparable to an NFL team, maybe even a Pro Bowl team, playing an NCAA All-Star team. The NFL team would win every time. Even Alabama would get smoked by the Detroit Lions. At least USU and Alabama are on the same level, albeit different ends, but still the same level.
If USU were to win it would be a huge upset, just not Miracle on Ice big.

It is a lot easier to pull off a huge upset win in low scoring sports where typical final scores are 2-1 (hockey, soccer) than in a sport like football. A couple of lucky bounces or judgement call penalties in the box can swing a game.

For context.
Imagine Alabama forming a football team with the same players it has now, never having played together before, and begins practice for the first time in July. Then, they play the best NFL team three months later.
And win.
That's The Miracle on Ice.

Except, they won. Meaning it was possible to win. I'm afraid there's just no scenario in which this game is winnable for USU, making it a potentially bigger upset. There is no chance USU wins this game.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑September 2nd, 2022, 1:59 pmFor context.

You can't use the fact that it already happened to make a case for it not being as big of an upset.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 2nd, 2022, 2:17 pmExcept, they won. Meaning it was possible to win. +33 App State (FCS) beat #5 Michigan, +45.5 Howard (FCS) beat UNLV, +40.5 Standford beat USC. Those teams weren't supposed to win and were in the same ballpark spread wise as USU, but they won. Meaning it is possible for the Aggies to win. Slight, but still possible, just like it was for these teams and the Miracle on Ice.

Perhaps Saban, in a fit of anger, will pull his Heisman QB after a mistake, the way the USSR coach pulled the best goalie in the world after giving up an early goal.

Here's the differences between Utah State and Alabama. Both university enrollments are about the same size. Click on te images below:
Alabama Athletic Budget
Utah State Athletic Budget
When you look at these numbers, you see that this is truly David vs. Goliath. And this time, God is not that invested in the outcome. Whomever said it was a one in 500 shot for USU to win this game? That was probably about right.
As happy a face as everybody will try to put on this one, we're playing it solely for the money. There is no other reason to put our guys through this.

But but but Nick Satan said that he heard in church that if I am humble I will be exalted and if I exalt myself I will be humbled. I'm not sure exactly how that fits with what you said but I was reminded of it with David, Goliath, God, money. I'll keep thinking about it.AggiesForever wrote: ↑September 2nd, 2022, 3:16 pmHere's the differences between Utah State and Alabama. Both university enrollments are about the same size. Michigan was a 33 point favorite. In Vegas, the aggies winning would be a much much bigger upset. In terms of points spreads, it would be the second biggest upset in college football history.treesap32 wrote:Come on bro. 0 times out of a million? That's just ridiculous. These are the biggest spread upsets. I love the worst was unlv vs an HBCU. It's just so...UNLV-ish.

There’s SEC teams this Bama team could play 100 times & never lose to.
Cincinnati beat everybody last year & was awesome.
They had 9 players drafted last year alone on that team! Yet Bama totally dominated them in the playoff & didn’t allow them to score a touchdown.

I agree 100%Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 2nd, 2022, 10:30 pmI have to put this game on an entirely different level because this Alabama team is on a different planet than that Michigan team.treesap32 wrote: ↑September 2nd, 2022, 6:29 pmCome on bro. 0 times out of a million? That's just ridiculous. A high school team playing Alabama? maybe.... But we're a reigning Mountain West Champion that ended the season in the top 25. We're also getting top 25 votes right now. Are those votes deserved? Maybe...> Maybe not.. But it's a fact.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 8:05 pm1 out of 30?Imakeitrain wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 5:57 pmNot an “old timer” so sorry if I’m butting in.
I’m sorry but usu wins this game 0 times out of a million.
People are really underestimating Alabama.
If we beat Bama it wouldn't be as big of an upset as Appalachian State beating Michigan.
There’s SEC teams this Bama team could play 100 times & never lose to.
Cincinnati beat everybody last year & was awesome.
They had 9 players drafted last year alone on that team! Yet Bama totally dominated them in the playoff & didn’t allow them to score a touchdown.

Don't count this Aggie team out. Going into the season last year what were the odds that we would beat Washington state, Oregon State and San Diego State?Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 8:05 pm1 out of 30?Imakeitrain wrote: ↑September 1st, 2022, 5:57 pmNot an “old timer” so sorry if I’m butting in.

Alabama & Georgia are a different animal than the rest of college football. Your eyes are going to be opened to that today.blueaggie wrote: ↑September 3rd, 2022, 8:47 amDon't count this Aggie team out. I’m convinced Nick Saban is giving the Aggies more of chance than you guys. There is a chance—not a very good chance—but still a chance the Aggies win.

It’s his job to give Utah state a chance. I prefer to live in reality & not have a meltdown after this game.USUaggienation wrote: ↑September 3rd, 2022, 2:44 pmI’m convinced Nick Saban is giving the Aggies more of chance than you guys. I don't think you will see much of a meltdown around here after this game unless there are some major injuries. Predict the Score thread shows what people really think. Pretty much everyone is on board with a blow out loss. It still can be fun to dream about a win just like it is fun to dream about winning the lottery. Very unlikely but fun to think about.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑September 3rd, 2022, 2:51 pmIt’s his job to give Utah state a chance.
