All time Aggies in the NFL
Clearly Merlin is #1 and with my limited NFL knowledge would put Bobby Wagner next followed by Rulon Jones. Donald Penn had a long and successful career. Who am I missing as Aggie NFL greats? Jim Turner? The basketball player that played for Dallas?

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
Obviously Jordan Love. Chris Cooley was a beast. Kevin Curtis had his time too.
I remember going down a rabbit hole about a year ago reading about a guy who overcame a ton of racial strife while here (he was black and had a white Utah wife) back in the not so good ole days- he then played for the Packers and I believe was one of their better players in SB1. He then had a bunch of mental health issues and was homeless for a time. I don’t remember his name but it was a truly fascinating read.
At the time i wanted to see who on the board knew more about this player but it touches on sensitive topics so I didn’t want to (and hope I’m not now) being insensitive.
Anyway, winning SB1 seems like solid evidence of a great nfl Aggie.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
It was Jordan’s performance this year (especially 2nd half of season) that got me thinking about this. He would be in my top 5 but I know that would be disrespecting a lot of older players that I’m not as familiar with.

Cornell Green, Patrick Scales, Al Smith. Phil Olsen was the #4 pick.

Jarrett Bush made a few big plays in the packers Super Bowl win. Nevin Lawson stuck around as a starter for several years. Nick Vigil has had similar success to Lawson.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
Al Smith was a great linebacker for many years for the Oilers.
Eric Hipple was a QB for the Lions for years.
Patrick Scales is still long-snapper for Bears and has been for years.
Couple that haven't been noted but as not as great of overall careers:
- Turbo won a superbowl with the Seahawks!
- Kevin Robinson played a few years with the Chiefs.
- Tyler Larsen is still with the Commanders.
- Jalen Davis is with the Bengals.
- Fackrell
- Zach Vigil

Wasn’t it Louie Giamona (I’m certain I botched the spellings) who would smash his helmet into his forehead before games with the Eagles?

Excellent lists! Greg Kragen was in the league for a lot of years. Hal Garner put a nasty hit on the Dolphins in the '90 or '91 playoffs that helped propel the Bill's to the conference championship game.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
I like to argue that Darwin Thompson is a better running back than Barry Sanders, cause he does have more super bowl rings, earning one when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.
Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
You have got to like to argue quite a bit if you are going to take that position!GameFAQSAggie wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2024, 9:42 pmI like to argue that Darwin Thompson is a better running back than Barry Sanders, cause he does have more super bowl rings, earning one when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl.

Is Bill related to Luke? I read somewhere that Bill (now in his late 70s) has suffered cognitive issues associated with traumatic brain injury.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
I think Phil Olsen should be part of this discussion. I've heard some claim that he would have been better than his brother if he hadn't blown out his knee. He still managed to have a fairly successful 8-year career in the NFL.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
Okay, serious question. If I do this research and try to put together a legitimate All-Time NFL Aggie Depth Chart.
Do I do a two or three-deep?
AND
Do I work out of a 3-4 OR a 4-3 set?
I would create a poll and let it run for a week or so BUT I don't know how.........
I'm always looking for unique article ideas to set myself apart from the others.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
2 deep unless 3 is obviously needed. Our defenses have always been better with a 3-4.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 4th, 2024, 7:36 amOkay, serious question. If I do this research and try to put together a legitimate All-Time NFL Aggie Depth Chart.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
All you have to do to see a list of Aggie players in the nfl is go to the pro football reference webpage. They have one for all the sports and are full of interesting stats, tips and trivia. I've used it for basketball to compare queta and merrill to other aggie players.
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/schools/utahst/
When I sorted the column based on weighted career value I was suprised that Bobby wagner was number 1 and Merlin was number 2. So what ever metric they use bobby is one point ahead of Merlin, and way behind in third is cornel green.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
Base your defense on the personnel! Do we have more linebackers or D linemen that have played in the NFL? I would guess linemen but not sure.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 4th, 2024, 7:36 amOkay, serious question. If I do this research and try to put together a legitimate All-Time NFL Aggie Depth Chart.

Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
I think two-deep, 3-4 for an All-time NFL team. In addition, what I think would be pretty awesome would be an All-time Aggie football and basketball teams that run, maybe, four deep. Maybe even expand into an All=time Aggie Athlete ranking to include other sports including women's. Then you pull in people like Chari Hawkins, LJ Sylvester, etc.aggies22 wrote: ↑January 4th, 2024, 7:36 amOkay, serious question. Does Jaylen Warren count? I’m not sure about him being a great Aggie but he’s been a good running back in Pittsburg so far….FeartheFro wrote: ↑January 2nd, 2024, 6:55 pmClearly Merlin is #1 and with my limited NFL knowledge would put Bobby Wagner next followed by Rulon Jones. Re: All time Aggies in the NFL
There are probably going to be positions for football that we might have a hard time going 3-4 deep. In basketball it will be tough to go 2-deep for NBA players. What I really want to see is a 26-man all-time Aggie baseball roster, a 4-line all-time Aggie great NHL roster, and a full squad with three subs English Premier League roster.

On a related note, I just saw that Bobby Wagner is 100% committed to playing in 2024.

Patrick Newman, WR for the Saints and Kendall Smith, WR for the Bengals in the late 80's and early 90's. Kendall set the school record for receiving TD's in season in 1988 if I recall correctly.
