There’s just something about Ashworth that I can’t put my finger on that leads me to believe he has “it,” whatever “it” is.
Maybe I’m crazy.

Based on the few videos I have seen of him at Utah State he certainly doesn't seem to lack any confidence. Excited to see what he can bring.slcagg wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2020, 8:43 pmI feel the same way. Confidence and shooting. It's so funny you said that watching that 10-second video of him, I had that same thought. Swagger. McChesney has some of that too. Good looking group.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2020, 8:35 pmThere’s just something about Ashworth that I can’t put my finger on that leads me to believe he has “it,” whatever “it” is.

Oh, yeah. It's the confidence. In everything I've seen, he just radiates it. It was also what I noticed watching the clip the first time. He doesn't hurt that he's attractive, too; we perceive attractive people as more capable and intelligent.

You are NOT crazy. Coming in this kid is probably one of the most unheralded. That will change quickly.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑September 23rd, 2020, 8:35 pmThere’s just something about Ashworth that I can’t put my finger on that leads me to believe he has “it,” whatever “it” is.

The utah county folk are going to wonder how Steven Ashworth ended up in Logan......and then make excuses as to why it happened.

I know that we have often talked about how important athleticism is in the MW. Does anyone have insight as to how athletic these guys are? Will they be able to guard the more athletic guards around the conference?

Re: Meet the new guys
The guys Smith recruits might happen to mostly be white, but are also long, athletic, and positionless. Bairstow and McChesney can get up there. We were not out-athleted last year against LSU, Florida, or SDSU with our (mostly) white dudes. It’s not like we’re talking Janicek here.
Associating athleticism with race is...well, racist.

Re: Meet the new guys
I'd love to see some killer defense coming from our guards. We know that Queta is an absolute beast and alters the play just be standing there. I've heard positives about Marco being a frustrating defender to play against. Max had some great FIBA showings offensively, so if he's got defensive chops, I think we could really use that.leefal1800 wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 9:53 amDecent class looking forward to seeing how they gel.

Be interesting if Queta can get back to 18/19 numbers but that maybe due to better perimeter D.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑October 8th, 2020, 10:16 amI'd love to see some killer defense coming from our guards. Re: Meet the new guys
First off these are just one man's opinions based on a snapshot of the team. A lot can change in the next two months. I'm as hungry as the rest of you for hoops of any kind so I thought you guys would appreciate a few nuggets I was able to dig up. Had a chance to chat with a few people inside the program and watch a little bit of the guys playing a while back. Here are some observations/updates.
Nothing new on this front but if Nemi stays healthy he is going to be unstoppable this year.
Marco is the real deal. Will be the go-to guy this season. Freaky athlete and he has taken on a big leadership role on the team. Broke his finger and will be out for a bit but nothing serious
Justin Bean is the perfect frontcourt mate to Nemi. Relentless effort doesn't need the ball to be effective. When he gets it he is very officiant. His shot is better, still not something I would rely on at this point.
Some serious battles going on for the 2 and 3 positions. Bairstow and Worster are really pushing Anderson and Miller respectively. I wouldn't be surprised if the vets started the season due to in-game experience but changes were made as the season went on. Bairstow is going to be fun to watch grow over the next couple of years.
Max is finally getting comfortable and could push for playing time. Max and Rollie in the backcourt together by sophomore junior year could be one of the better backcourts in the conference. They are both big strong guards that do a lot of things really well for freshmen.
Zahar is adjusting to the structure of college hoops. Quite a bit different than pro ball overseas. He has some real potential
Trevin and Liam have shown some improvement, consistency is going to be big to push for more PT. Syzmon moves well for a young big, his upside is really high. Especially with the depth at both of their positions not sure how he sees playing time without injury or a big jump in the coming months as he gets more comfortable.
There is no doubt Ashworth can shoot and has all the moxie you want in a player but he might need some time to marinate for a season due to his size. He struggles defensively which seems to be a big factor with coach Smith. But when you can shoot that opens up doors and he can do that. With the thin/unproven depth at the guard position, I could see them not using a redshirt on any of the FR guards.
The two walk-ons have a ways to go.
Losing Sam is a BIG one but I think all things considered from top to bottom from a talent standpoint/guys being a year older and improving this team could be even better than last year. Obviously, a lot of this is still "on paper" at this point which is always dangerous and there will be growing pains no doubt. If we end up having a season it could be a really fun one.

Great write up. Thank you.
So Anderson is playing on the wing?
How long is Marco out?
What’s your guess as far as depth chart?

I'm curious about Liam, is he a 3 or 4? Does he look like a major contributor at this point? Is he a fluid athlete or just a jump shooter?
Outside of Jalen Moore (who should be playing pro ball somewhere), USU has never really had a wing player with that height and star (recruit) ranking before. Anxious to learn more.

Re: Meet the new guys
I would say the 4 as of now, a very fluid athlete for his size still needs to get stronger. Has decent shot, but does a good job of slashing to the rim.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑October 17th, 2020, 1:19 amI'm curious about Liam, is he a 3 or 4? I was thinking the same thing. Unless you want to balance out scholarships a bit. Those tend to work themselves out over time anyway.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 7:38 pmIs there a reason to redshirt anyone since this year doesn’t count against eligibility?
