My observation

Post by SLB » December 10th, 2020, 2:22 pm

The starters should be Ashworth, Worster, Bairstow, Bean, and Queta, and the top reserves should be Miller, Anthony, and Dorius.
Ashworth, Worster, and Bairstow combo looked really good in the College of Idaho game, and we need more of this line-up going forward.

The chemistry and the flow of the game and style of the game of Bairstow, Ashworth, and Worster was at a different level than the other guards that we have on the team. Worster is a very good inside the 3-point line shooter with great FT scoring, Bairstow 6-8 wing/guard that can shoot from anywhere and move to wherever needed, and Ashworth true PG with 3 point shooting and FT scoring.

I would play Anthony over Bairstow at this point.

I'm not in the Bairstow camp. I honestly can't stand watching him play. He is soft taking it to the rack.

Why is/has Miller been starting? To my admittedly untrained eye, I can't come up with 3 good reasons why he is a starter.

would "who else are you going to put there?" be one reason?

He gets the yips when he drives in there because he’s been call for charging so many times. He just needs to learn when to pull up, use a change of speed or direction, euro step it, dunk over the top, or not go in at all. I still think he will get there and the potential is to high to give up on him especially considering the other options. I agree with the original post, not because I think it is our best 5 players, but because that group of 5 will give us our best potential to win a game. Bring Anthony off the bench, we need shooting in a bad way.

I don't think he should be dribbling into the key at all. He is out of control. He dribbles the ball high, making it susceptible to being stolen, and he is not strong enough to finish at the rim. His points in the key (and Liam's, too) should come from back cuts and passes from teammates. Queta is a good passer. Bean, too. They can get the ball at the free throw line and pass to cutting Bairstow and McChesney. I think they both could be effective that way. Neither is going to be an effective "drive to the basket" type of player. Both can shoot outside and get their inside baskets cutting without the ball.

Bairstow has proven he can shoot from anywhere. The real question is whether he can make any of his shots.

Literally, anybody else who can dribble a basketball.

Agreed. He has the quickness and craftiness to beat his defender and get to the hoop, which is a high-value skill. However, like you said, he often misses easy shots at the rim or runs into the other defender who slid over to help. Unlike Miller, it's still way too early to give up on him. He'll (most likely) figure it out with some added confidence and PT. IF he does, watch out!
