Re: Sam Waived
Man.... Pretty sad "Happy New Year" surprise for Sam.
I hope a team who really wants him can sign him now. Problem is, he's injured.

Hell no! Keep the NBA dream alive as long as you can. It's a great time to be high-level FA; teams are scrambling to find guys who can play. Assuming he's close to recovering from the bum ankle, he might have a chance to make a name for himself with a team that needs him.

It looks like Sam is having a procedure done on his ankle and will be out 3-4 months so it’s not looking good.

Re: Sam Waived
Yeah the ankle injury would suck no matter what, but really sucks this year when he would have got his chance to play with covid ravaging rosters throughout the league. Him being waived isn't surprising. Memphis has really found their groove with their current rotation and is playing great ball. However, a healthy Merrill would have found a spot on numerous other rosters right now. Too bad.

A borderline player with a history of ankle injuries is going to have a tough time finding an NBA job with each passing year and a new crop of younger players coming up.

He can try to keep it alive, but I don’t think that dream will be alive much longer. The ankle has really robbed it from him. Too bad because I think he could have found a place in the NBA.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑January 1st, 2022, 10:44 pmHell no! Keep the NBA dream alive as long as you can. Be interesting to see if a team picks him up late this season. Normally is say no, with COVID though...

This is the year for borderline players. That is why it sucks he is injured. Had he been healthy, him being waived by the Grizz would have been a good thing since he would have quickly found a spot on another roster. If it is true he is out for several months, there is a good chance he has played his final NBA game.

There is a good chance we will still have some of the same issues next year at this time. Re: Sam Waived
Maybe, but the covid rules won't be as strict next year. They already limited the quarantine period from 10 to 5 days. There is a chance there just isn't testing at all next year, especially for vaccinated players. (Obviously depending on the state of the world).slcagg wrote: ↑January 2nd, 2022, 10:34 amThere is a good chance we will still have some of the same issues next year at this time. It also depends on what Merrill wants to do this offseason. He can make more money in Europe than in the G League. If he goes to Europe, being an NBA replacement player for a few games with the hope that he balls out is a big risk and not likely.

Every single player who made it to the NBA will eventually be a former NBA player. Just to get drafted and make the NBA is a remarkable feat. If this is the end for Merrill he still has that on his life resume.

Nope, just mainstream media (e.g., NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, ESPN, Time, Newsweek, New Yorker, NYT, Vox, Atlantic, Washington Post, Boston Globe, Huffington Post, USA Today, Slate, Colbert Report, Politico, Buzzfeed, NPR, etc.) and occasionally the Salt Lake Tribune.Mr. Sneelock wrote: ↑January 3rd, 2022, 3:02 pmDon't read the Des News? This was a good thread, let's not drag it into a fredette thread.
it's got to be frustrating to have an injury that gets you waived. i hope he still gets his money.

Unless we're talking about a 4x or 5x difference, I'd take less money to live and play in Europe over more money to live and play in China without a second thought.

He retired, I believe. Last year was his last, despite fans asking him for one more. Not sure if he has any interest in coaching, but I'd be all for it. I can see his advice now: "Shoot 24,000 shots in the off season. Re: Sam Waived
All the articles I have read stated that Memphis is fond of Sam and he is on their radar. Is it possible that he was waived, due to the roster crunches around the league and will be back with Memphis after surgery?

Re: Sam Waived
I think so. They had to convert the other player from a two way contract to a guaranteed contract. They had to clear a spot to do that. They chose Sam as the player to waive because they think the risk of losing Sam to another team, with Sam out for a few months with surgery, is low.
