Such a weird game tonight

Post by jpswensen » November 28th, 2023, 10:28 pm

I had hoped our days of have big runs and big famines was over. Not so.

If you look at the stat line, it is a little bizarre how the game was so close.

We outrebounded them by a lot
We had 7 blocks.
We shot 57.4% overall (on 2 pointers, we shot an almost video game percentage of 76.3%)
We had 20 assists on 35 made buckets.

It really came down to horrendous 3pt shooting, them being near perfect on FT, and way more turnovers than we should have. Osobor is a beast and A LOT of our success so far is due to him, but he is averaging 4.14 turnovers per game. That has to improve. Darius Brown has fewer turnovers in the season that Osobor's two worst games.

We have so, so much promise and can go on epic runs, but we seem to still have problems with massive dry spells. I was hoping a new cast and new director would fix that, but maybe we are just cursed.

Or maybe it's just an entirely new team learning on the fly how to play together in a new system (for all but 2 guys) and still being 6-1. :noidea:

Greats turnovers may not improve. And that’s ok. We will have to take the good with the bad. Let’s live with his 22 and 11 points and rebound nightly output ——he’s going to turn it over due to his workload. Oh well.

If he can cut them down, awesome. But part of the beauty of his game is his aggressiveness. Don’t want to cut into that.

SLU also shot over 40% from three on 24 attempts.

Most basketball teams go through dry spells. Its keeping them few and far between that's the key.

I agree, but they didn't seem few and far between in this game.

Well, we had a 2.5 minute stretch with only 2 points early in the 1st half, had a 3 minutes stretch to end the 1st half, a 2 minute stretch near the start of the 2nd half, a 3 minute stretch starting at the 11 minute mark of the second half, and a 4.5 minute stretch starting with 6:19 left in the 2nd half where we scored 4 points. That means that for about 15 minutes of the game we scored 8 points, or about 37.5% of games time where we scored about 10% of our points.

And in 60% of the game we scored 90% of our points. Basketball is a game of runs. At the end of the game, we settled for dribbling on the perimeter for most of the shot clock and then a forced corner three. We played right into their hands. Our press breaker was suspect at times. The refs swallowed their whistle for us at the end. Oh yeah, and we won.

I should like to know our FT defensive numbers. Seems we’ve played teams who shot free throws very well. I should very much like to see those numbers..

Agreed, it's the funniest named statistic in sports.

Which is why the lead dwindled in the 2nd half. The dry spells were too close together and had two too many.

I don't think it was weird at all. Seen thousands of games like this. Team is up big, takes foot off the gas. Other team gets desperate and steps on the gas. Team hits a few 3's gets some turnovers and it gets tight.

Yeah, basketball is definitely a game of runs. The past few years it seems like we had very long scoreless droughts of 6-8 minutes at times. I didn't think last night was particularly odd. The home team almost always makes a push to end the game. That is part of what makes true road games tough. We won a true road game against a decent team. I'll take it.

Didn’t we wear black uniforms? There’s your curse. Fortunately this team had just enough moxie to overcome it.

Is this teams weakness going small ball? We really seem to get things going when it is not just Great down low by himself.

Looking at the box score, our rotation minutes were a bit odd compared to previous games. We only played 8 guys, and when you factor in Isaac barely playing in 2H and Templin not at all (he played 3 minutes, I believe all in 1H), we pretty much only played 6 guys in 2H. Sakho, Burris and Jackson didn't play at all.

Will be interesting to watch this going forward. I thought we'd have some depth and spread playing time around a bit more, but so far Sprinkle is leaning heavily on his most trusted guys (not that I blame him). As we get deeper into the season, hopefully a few more guys step up and earn some playing time to help carry the load.
