Funny that he couldn't get playing time or a roster spot for an upper-tier team like Sacramento. He had to drop down a couple levels to Boston. That's why the Kings are always contending for titles - they don't take just anyone.valleyaggie21 wrote: ↑January 19th, 2024, 2:13 pmLooks like Queta is a fan favorite and has a ceiling that hasn't been reached yet for Boston.tysteve20 wrote: ↑January 18th, 2024, 10:13 amhttps://bleacherreport.com/videos/51599 ... ws-it-down

I'm a long-time Kings fan and it still doesn't make sense they gave up on him. He was doing these kinds of things in Sacramento and was a big-time fan favorite. Sam getting cut makes even less sense. A very very long time. Excluding Desmond Penigar (who got a 10-day contract in 2004), Merrill and Queta are the first USU players to play any minutes in the NBA since Marv Roberts and Nate Williams (who both entered the NBA in 1972). It's kind of remarkable that USU has been so good for so long with so few NBA-caliber players.FeartheFro wrote: ↑January 17th, 2024, 9:51 pmSammy 10 points 5 assists 5 boards in 22 minutes. Re: Sam
He might have been able to collect a paycheck for a few years as a "instant offense/lights out shooter the defense needs to respect guy" toward the bottom of some team's bench, but that was probably his absolute ceiling. I think he was smart to be content with a fat paycheck on a championship team in Europe. I seem to recall a BYU player with a similar game who washed out of the NBA very quickly after realizing he could have a more lucrative career playing in a lower-tier league. I can't remember his name, though.Elkaggie wrote: ↑January 17th, 2024, 12:29 pmJaycee is too short to play effectively in today’s NBA.Yossarian wrote: ↑January 17th, 2024, 10:49 amJaycee was born about 5 or 6 years too early.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑January 17th, 2024, 10:31 amSam's greatest friend in his NBA career: a wide open ceiling for incredible 3-pt shooters.

Re: Sam
If I recall correctly, Jaycee played in three summer leagues in the NBA - he had no problems scoring when given the opportunity. Unfortunately, he was always handed the ball and told to play PG because of his size; obviously, this was not his skillset. In fact, I also recall him saying NBA teams would tell him they wanted to run him at SG but then as soon as he showed up, boom, now he's a PG. After three years of the bs he decided to solidify his legend as Jaycee 'boom boom' Carroll in Italy and stopped taking the calls from the NBA.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑January 19th, 2024, 8:17 pmHe might have been able to collect a paycheck for a few years as a "instant offense/lights out shooter the defense needs to respect guy" toward the bottom of some team's bench, but that was probably his absolute ceiling. I spoke with him after his sophomore year, NBA scouts were telling him then he needed to learn the point but Stew refused to play him there. Same thing happened to Steph Curry and he evolved his game. JC could have easily done the same.

Jaycee vs Steph; I think that is a different paradigm. Being that he was the 7th overall pick in the draft, Steph Curry was going to be given every opportunity, especially a long rope of time, to evolve his game. Even in college Curry wasn't purely a catch-and-shoot guard, he had the green light to create shots on his own, including step-back threes before they became en vogue.
Jaycee was never going to get the same grace period by an NBA team to become a true point guard, especially sitting at the end of the bench.
I always thought he could have been a Vinnie Johnson type (the Microwave / Pistons late 80's) who would come off the bench for fifteen minutes with the green light shooting jumpers off set screens, set plays. If he's hot, he stays in, taking the scoring load off the regulars; if it's not his night, he fills minutes and goes back to the bench.

Re: Sam
I think Jaycee could do what Sam Merrill is doing. Jayce has guaranteed money overseas and he was smart to take it.
I mean, Sam is on his third team and all before he had earned regular minutes. Jayce would have bounced around a lot and may never have gotten the opportunity Sam had earned. He’s had to force Cleveland to play him.

The problem was, Carroll came around when the league was transitioning from the true shooting guard to the tall, rangy "wing" guards that could handle the ball, drive, post up, and get fouled. It became more of a one-on-one game and Carroll didn't have the height teams were looking for. The league had transitioned again to value three-point shooting, which is Merrill's forte.

Re: Sam
In those highlights it's awesome see Donovan Mitchell deliberately looking for Sam to get him 3-point looks.

Re: Sam
I noticed that too. Mitchell is getting a lot of assists by drawing defenders and then kicking out to Sam. Mitchell has full confidence and is probably very happy to have Sam. If Sam keeps hitting at this rate then Mitchell will see a lot fewer double teams and it will open his game and increase his shooting percentage as well.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑January 23rd, 2024, 10:26 amIn those highlights it's awesome see Donovan Mitchell deliberately looking for Sam to get him 3-point looks.
