Sprinkle
He says all the right things! He talks about how he wants to be here for a long time, he says it’s an honor to coach here, he doesn’t take for granted the Spectrum and its traditions. He seems very humble and very different from Odom and Smith. I would be very surprised if he left after this year, but is there a legitimate chance we pay him what he’s worth and he sticks around for the next 5-7 years? How much is he making now, and how much will he be worth after this season?

Re: Sprinkle
I think those are all true but hearing in him interviews he has a lot of concerns about money in the program. He hammers a lot about needing more NIL and in the most recent coaches show you could tell he was somewhat upset about the department not having the resources to charter flights when conference mates charter most of their games. I truly do think he likes it here but am not sold that he will be here long term. I certainly hope to wrong in that regard. Not sure the huge concern with charter flights as i guarantee at MSU he was not chartering much but it was for sure something he is not thrilled about. I do think he respects the program and realizes how special it can be with the great homecourt the program has.

I just have to trust that the AD is taking care of business on this one. She seems very in touch.

First, we need to get a bar in Logan so he doesn't have to keep driving to SLC to get to the nearest bar.

We should probably realize by now that coaches like Sprinkle won't be here long term. I appreciate his genuine coach speak, but this isn't my first rodeo.

Re: Sprinkle
I agree with @NVAggie . We've had enough of those "promises" broken that I just won't believe it anymore. Best thing is to enjoy each one, as now the last 3 have enjoyed great success. Would much rather have them get stolen than fired, so just enjoy the ride and don't expect them to stay because they probably won't (I hope I'm wrong, but the past would support that).
We keep hoping for a Mark Few type of coach who wants to stick around, and maybe it'll happen at some point... But the reality is, we aren't a program/community with nearly as much money as the bigger programs, so we will likely stay as a stepping stone unless somebody really falls in love with the school and area.

What is more likely, Sprinkle sticking around for the next 5-years, or The Spectrum getting new seats during that span?

Certainly the money is not where we would hope it to be. But we pay our head basketball coach competitively against MWC programs. We are right around ~4th in basketball salary for the head coach.AggieIceCream05 wrote: ↑February 21st, 2024, 12:40 pmWe have The Spectrum and its history, we have The Hurd, we have a rich tradition of consistency in terms of winning, but we don’t have the money . . .

Re: Sprinkle
If Sprinkle gets even 1 NCAA tournament win, after the year USU has had exceeding expectations, I can't imagine Sprinkle's stock will ever be higher than what it will be in March. If he was going to chase money - this would be the year to do it.

Re: Sprinkle
I would assume that Sprinkle would want to stay fairly close to Montana, where Mama Sprink and other family resides. I would be surprised if he left after this season. He’s going to at least run things back with Osobor, Falsev, Johnson, and the new recruits coming in!

Re: Sprinkle
I agree - but I miss the old days when you'd get to keep a successful coach 4-5 years before they were poached (we had Eustachy for 5 before he left for greener pastures). We are worried about losing Sprinkle after one year, lol. And it's valid. We had Smith for 3 years, and Odom for 2. Would be painful if we only get Sprinkle for one. And with the transfer rules being what they are, a lot of guys could leave with him. Obviously, we've shown you can be very successful with a new coach and new roster. And the fans will still show up for a winning team. However, it's very difficult if you turn over the roster every season and lose a coach every couple seasons. Not all hires can be home runs, at some point you end up with a dureya. Let's hope Sprinkle stays 3-4 years and doesn't gut the roster when he leaves (wishful thinking perhaps).

What are the player transferring rules? Osobor has already transferred, so is he not allowed to transfer again? Sprinkle wouldn’t leave Osobor for his senior season.

We need The Hurd to show more appreciation to Sprinkle. Maybe every student could get a handful of sprinkles and toss them up in the air before the game, like LeBron would do with powder?

Right now there are basically no rules regarding how many times a player can transfer. It used to be one unless a player had already graduated but this year the NCAA overturned and it is basically transfer as much as you want.AggieIceCream05 wrote: ↑February 21st, 2024, 1:08 pmWhat are the player transferring rules? I would like to personally congratulate the maturity level of this board. It’s a big step for us as a group to recognize that Sprinkle could leave after 1 year. While we would all think it sucked, it is reality. Who knows what we might get next time. Without Odom leaving we would have never experienced Danny. With that said, I hope he is here for another 10 years.

Re: Sprinkle
I haven’t really payed attention in past years, but it seems like the spectrum is selling out more games this year than it did in recent years. Sprinkle is also bringing a lot more national coverage and attention to USU just because the media guys love him. I would think that those things alone should get him a big pay day this off season. If he wins coach of the year or has any post season success then there will be a line of schools ready to pay him 2-3 million a year.

Of course he is not a terrible person and an average coach who had a lot of luck here. That was Smith. Smith sucked and that dirty bastard left for Utah. Not only that but Smith inherited 3 NBA players in Sam, Justin, and Neemias. Then he left with the only two players that liked him.shoresy wrote: ↑February 21st, 2024, 1:41 pmThe next step is to accept that if he does, in fact, leave, that doesn’t mean that he’s a terrible person and an average coach who just had a lot of luck here.FeartheFro wrote:I would like to personally congratulate the maturity level of this board. Re: Sprinkle
I think we are a fan base suffering from PTSD after losing coach after coach.
I'm all for paying him well and giving him one less reason to leave, but outside of that single reason ($$), what else is there?
I am waiting for one of these coaches to think things through a bit and realize that they have everything here to create a top notch program that is respected on a national level. There is already the arena, bonkers home atmosphere, support facilities, and history. A lot of momentum over decades has been built and many of these things are constants, they aren't fluctuating from year to year.
Add in that there are also a couple of players that have been drafted and stayed in the NBA. A team from your own conference just played for the national championship. What the program lacks is someone at the helm who has a long term vision for what could be accomplished on a national level.
Coach Sprinkle says a lot of the right things but I hope he really does see it for what it is worth. He could accomplish everything he wants as a coach from right in Logan.
