Sprinkle's (possible) replacements

Post by elcheque2 » March 8th, 2024, 5:29 pm

Please don't get mad at me. I love these kinds of threads because it's fun to speculate.

With Sprinkle possibly leaving for greener ($$$) pastures and taking 90% of the team with him in 2 or 3 weeks, who are you all hoping we hire?

With Sabau's connections in the Midwest, do we go after a top big 10 or big east assistant, or do we go after another young big sky level up-and-coming head coach?

Who are some names out there you guys would be interested in?

I'll go first...

Amir Abdur-Rahim - wouldn't it be hilarious if we poached USF's head coach a year after their fans were dunking on us for poaching Odom. I don't know much about him, but he completely turned around that team in one year.

Alex Jensen - maybe he wants to come back to Utah after getting let go by the Jazz and living in Dallas for a year?

David Riley - has done well at EWU. Young guy.

John Groce - Akron's head coach. Former Illinois head coach.

Darian DeVries - Drake head coach. Has won 20 or more games each of the last 6 seasons.

DeVries easily tops my list. I also don’t hate the idea of Chris Holtmann. I think he’d do really well at this level

In no particular order. Tim Miles, David Riley, Chris Victor, Chris Holtman, Eric Henderson.

Any answer that isn’t Ryan Thompson is wrong. The guy even kind of looks like Stew.

Let's wait until we have to have this discussion. For now, let's just pack the spectrum tomorrow, win an outright title, and enjoy the ride! There will be tons of time to speculate if/when something happens.

Your anger is valid. I'm angry too. I wish we weren't a stepping stone for coaches. I'll be happy to eat crow if Sprinkle stays, but what are message boards for if not to speculate?

Mods, feel free to axe this thing if you want. I won't be offended. Go Aggies!

Sprinkle's (possible) replacements

Post by AGGIEinIOWA » March 8th, 2024, 6:15 pm

Not a big fan of this thread……but I’ll play along.

DeVries (Drake) would be high on my list, especially if he brought his son Tucker and a couple players with him (Wright, Overton).

Dustin Kearns (App St) is a great coach and can both recruit and develop. I think he’s from the South so I’m not sure if he’d be interested or not.

Will Wade (McNeese/LSU) - JK. Would be too controversial. Lol

Russ Turner (UCI) - Has had long sustained success.

Tim Miles (SJSU) - probably a safe pic but maybe not the highest of ceilings. May stay for a while.

Watching Les Miles transition from a former SEC football coach to a Mountain West basketball coach would certainly be interesting.

No offense guys, but suddenly I feel like I'm 10 years old again listening to the ladies at my mother's bridge party speculating on whether Mrs. X is having an affair with the pool boy and speculating on whether Mr. X knows and who's going to get custody of the kids.

He can't take the team with him. They almost all transfers that can't use another one.

Not that it’s gonna matter since Danny is gonna be an Aggie next year but there’s no more restrictions for transfers. They can bounce around at will

Some pretty well in-the-know posters here think he is probably gone and Goodman is pretty adamant, which he wouldn't do unless he was also pretty confident. He has a pretty solid reputation to protect.

Unfor, his thread is probably just early.

I don't get the constant clamoring for assistant coaches. Of course I'd love the same style to continue, but we deserve a proven HC. And a coach who did well somewhere else can definitely do well here. If the last handful of coaches have taught us anything, it's that an already proven HC might even have an easier time being more successful at Utah State than their past institution.

I agree. Our last assistant didn't work out very well as the head coach but he was/is a damn good assistant coach. Like the best of the best.

Adam Hiatt, just finished a 3peat conference championship. Only MTech coach since Kelvin Sampson to have a 3peat. NAIA to NCAA worked nicely for Mr. Sampson. Plus, the dude's a bishop, so presumably would fit the Logan demographic.TIC.
