Future Coaching Contracts.

Post by Bullnamed_gus » March 9th, 2024, 11:58 am

Utah State has the leverage now. We’ve clearly shown that we can be a launch pad program for coaches. We are always going to get attractive applicants. It’s time for Utah state to come up with a more aggressive buyout structure that’s not largely unreasonable for bigger programs.

I’m meaning if Utah State terminates its only like 50% of who has left, and if the coach terminates its 100% of what’s left, and if it’s after year one you pay back everything that has been paid or 150% of what’s left on the contract.

There could be elevator clauses like for an NCAA tournament win it drops to 75%, or something, but the sentiments in other threads are fair. We are helping out these coaches substantially more than they’re helping us now if they don’t win tournament games. We’ve had 3 coaches, make the tournament in 4 years. It’s clear that a lot of coaches can win here. It’s time for the USU Athletic Department to use some leverage.

I don’t really agree with the counter argument of “you won’t get great, up and coming coaches if you make the buyout aggressive” or whatever. It’s painfully obvious even mediocre coaches (see Craig Smith’s results at Utah) can make the tournament here. We will still get plenty of great candidates.

Attaching aggressive buyouts makes sense when you can recruit the best up and coming candidates by telling them we'll pay you $1M/yr and when you succeed you'll get a $1.5 to $3M per year raise at your next job offer within the next year or two.

And that’s what we’ve done. Odom even got a bit of a raise. And he would be getting P5 offers right now had he stayed here and made the tournament again.

We have the Leverage, it’s time for the AD to use it.

I'd like to see it written in to the buyout clause that the school stealing our coach must schedule a two for one with USU (with 2 games being in Logan) starting the following season.

VCU has done a home/home in their coach's contracts, and it has worked very well for them over the years. A 3 game series would be too difficult logistically.
