Aggies now have no Q2 losses

Post by dogie » March 14th, 2024, 9:05 am

Before yesterday’s games, the Aggies had one Q2 loss and were 5-4 in Q1 games.

UNLV dropped from 75 to 78 this morning, which changed that Q1 win to Q2. But Nevada moved from 31 to 30. That makes the home Nevada loss a Q1 game. As a result, USU now is 4-5 in Q1 games and has no Q2 losses.

I think Q1 at 4-5 with no Q2 losses is better than 5-4 in Q1 with one Q2 loss. I haven’t looked, but I’m sure that no more than ten teams have only Q1 losses.

If the Aggies beat Fresno State today, UNLV tomorrow and then win on Saturday, they will finish with a 7-5 Q1 record and no Q2 losses. That’s a 4-seed or even 3-seed resume.

Edit - there are only five teams with no losses in Q2, Q3 or Q4. Those are Houston, Purdue, UConn (top 3 NET teams), Auburn (6) and USU (31). But Auburn is only 1-7 in Q1.

The no chance we'd be a 3 seed, and no realistic chance we are a 4 seed. Perform well and we should be a 5 seed.

I think we are pretty much locked into the 6-7 position. Lose today and maybe we bump down to an 8.

Heres how I'm looking at it.
Lose today: 8
Lose tomorrow: 7
Lose in the championship: 6
Win the championship: 6 with small chance at 5 depending on other conference results

Nevada and SDSU are listed as 5 seeds. If we win the MW, I think we are a 5.

I mean, we're ranked in the top 20--I don't think getting a 5-seed should be a stretch. Maybe it just unfamiliar territory or we've been stung too many times.

Older Aggies remember getting left out of the tournament altogether as a ranked team.

I think our resume isn’t far from projected 3-4 seeds right now and could be better if we win out. There’s a chance. We are projected a 5 seed right now in many brackets.

This is my favorite bracketology site. I don’t know how accurate is, but he spends a massive about of time on this on Twitter. He has USU as the second of the four 5-seeds. The Aggies are just behind BYU and Auburn (with one Q1 win and no bad losses).

The committee had us pegged at a 6 in its mock selection a few weeks ago. 4 or 5 is in the realm. If CSU can get up to 30 we'd have another Q1 win.

Is Bradley not a Q2 loss? Or does that count as Q1?

Also, are we Q1? How come Bradley is showing 0 Q1 wins in that case?

:headscratch:

Since it was at Bradley, we'd need to be top 30 NET for them to get a Q1, which could still happen. Bradley only needs to be top 75 NET for them to count as Q1 for us since it was on the road. They are currently 58 so safely a Q1 for us.

I see us easily becoming a 4 seed. SDSU was a projected4 seed for quite awhile before they started to drop. If we win out, there is no way with the MWC being as strong as it is this year, that they don't give us a 4 seed. I do believe it requires winning out.

My guess would be something along the lines of:

Lose in the championship: 5
Win the championship: 4 or 5

I'm guessing our Nevada loss drops to Q2 again after their early exit.

The Nevada loss and the UNLV win are now in the Q2 column. By the time the week is over, I expect Boise State to be 30 or better. I also expect UNLV to get back into the top 75 even though they won’t play again. They are currently 77.
