Seeding Discussion

Post by AgsRock » March 15th, 2024, 9:46 am

Somebody honestly tell me how SDSU and Nevada consistently get predicted for higher seeds than the Aggies. We are also usually on the same seed line as CSU? What gives.

I worry that you will see why tonight... I hope I am wrong.

Probably comes down to them beating top ranked teams in non-conference play, and not having multiple double digit losses.

Also, winning like 20 games by single digits. Fresno last night was the perfect example. We pulled away a few times, including late in the game, but we allowed them back in every time. Not sure what it is with this team and keeping games close.

None of the algorithms have something called clutch points. Michael Jordan would not have rated highly in the current system.

That’s all in the NET ranking and we are not very far behind them (30 compared to 20). They have 4 more Q1 losses than we do and worse road/neutral record. We should be more even with them. Their Kenpom is much higher than ours.

But, alas, I’m not too worried about it. We should get a 4-6seed at this point and that is good.

They'd just alter it to have a special "Michael Jordan factor" as part of the equation.

Jerry Palm actually has us as the best seeded MW team at least for now. It’s miracle. He usually has us on the down and out. I get Kenpom but there still has to be outliers. Keep it close tonight and 5 may be possible. Win tomorrow and I really think we get a 4 seed. 29 and 6 would be tough to ignore in the best year the MW has ever been.

4 or 5 should be our goal. Huge difference between 5 and 6. Win out maybe the committee will surprise us with a 3 seed. Tall task. JFW

StanfordAggie robot here. This is my reminder that seeding is subjective and unpredictable, and there can be significant divergence between a team's S curve rating and its actual seeding in the bracket. So small seeding differences in mock brackets are literally meaningless. And we could lose tonight and get a higher seed, or we could win the tournament and get a lower seed, because the process is subjective and unpredictable. StanfordAggie robot now offline...

I really believe that 5 is our ceiling and we likely only have a chance at it if we win the MWCT. A 4 is a pipe dream.

I wouldn't say it's a pipe dream, but it's not likely even if we win the MWCT.
