March 15, 2001
The date of our last NCAA win. It turned 23 yesterday.
Was anyone here in attendance? Do you remember watching it on TV? Were you even alive?
I was a student at the time and watched with a group of friends. Such a great moment. Never would've guessed that 23 years later it would still be our most recent tournament win.
Hopefully we can break the streak this year.

Re: March 15, 2001
A weird game in the official archives. Our win apparently counts, but OSU's loss does not. Apparently.
That was only Stew's third year. As long as his tenure was, it's incredible to ponder that he would never get another NCAA tourney or NIT win. As I've said elsewhere, we'll always have the 2012 CBI.

Re: March 15, 2001
This happened 2 seasons before I moved to Logan and became a USU fan.
Incidentally the first game game I saw in the Spectrum was a loss. After suffering through the come from ahead loss against BYU in FB in 02, my peers told me that the bball team was way better. Cue the Vandal win. After 20 years, I'm not sure I made the right decision to go back to another BB game.

Re: March 15, 2001
Here is a question that can seem very random and unrelated to sports, but is actually very relevant to the current time of the year. Who has gotten a traffic ticket in Logan and then done the defensive driving course? The relevant part of the question is that the classroom they send you to where the course is taught is where I was for the 2001 win over Ohio State. Or have any of you ever been to an event held in that classroom.
intermeddler at that time was in a classroom in the main part of the school that has since been demolished, and that Logan High was rebuilt in place of.

I was serving an LDS mission in Guatemala at the time. The letter arrived with the news at the standard 3 week delay, inside the typical opened and then taped together envelope. I did laps around the church building singing The Scotsman.

Re: March 15, 2001
I graduated from USU in Spring 1998, right as everyone was mourning the loss of Eustachy (yes, they were). In March 2001, I was about to finish my Masters at CU, went on to the Ph.D., and am still in Boulder.
Re: March 15, 2001
I was at the game…I was serving in the North Carolina Charlotte mission at the time. We had a zone conference in Greensboro the day before. We stayed in Greensboro for the game Thursday. At first our mission President said no. My companion who was also from Cache Valley persuaded him to let us go. Pretty fun memory.

Re: March 15, 2001
One thing that's funny was the following school year, they did a thing in Seminary where returned missionaries would come to our classes one day to talk about what a mission is like and a girl came to my class served in North Carolina and would have been there at that time. I raised my hand and asked her if she got to go the game when the Aggies played and she just said "No, you don't get to do that kind of stuff as a missionary" as she apparently never found out than any missionaries DID get to go to the game, and apparently never learned before, during or even after her mission(or even me asking the question) that going to games is something a president has an option to say they can do.Bluened wrote: ↑March 16th, 2024, 10:46 amI was at the game…I was serving in the North Carolina Charlotte mission at the time. I am always amazed at how many people just go around thinking that going to games is something churchwide that missionaries are not allowed to do anywhere, and are surprised to get on the mission and find out that either they will get to go or that other missionaries get to go under one set of circumstances or another.
Stillman White quite a few times attended our basketball games while he was serving here.

I was running a covert CIA operation along with Delta and Rangers from the 75th Army Ranger Regiment, in a remote region outside of Kabul, Afghanistan when one of the Afghani warlords we were assisting gave us the good news (he had the March Madness package via Netscape). We declined his offer of a ceremonial beheading to commemorate the occasion, but all in all it was a good day.

I was a junior in High School. I honestly don't remember if I watched it or not. I remember watching the Kansas game in 2003 but don't really remember getting into NCAA Tournaments before that.

My mission call came the day the pep band left for the 2000 Big West tournament in Reno, so I had to wait four days to get back home and open it. I wasn’t complaining about USU winning and going undefeated in conference play that year, but it was a long 4 days to have to wait to open my call.

Grad student in Seattle. A day or two before the game, told a classmate (physiology or biostats) to mark it down - USU was definitely beating OSU.

Re: March 15, 2001
I was in grad school (on the West Coast). It was finals week, and I had been up all night working on a take-home final and was trying to catch a few hours of sleep. Honestly I wasn't even paying attention to basketball at that point. Anyway, my phone stared ringing and woke me up. I answered and heard the voice of a friend in my department on the other line: "You need to get over here now!" I was half awake and trying to figure out what kind of emergency justified waking me up in the middle of finals. He continued: "Utah State is in overtime!" I immediately grabbed my keys and ran to his apartment in the next building over. (I didn't have a TV at the time.) So I only saw about the last three minutes of overtime. But I saw Brown's shot and the win. Definitely worth sleep deprivation during finals week.

Which one is the cover for the other?
Though perhaps this was some sort of Boogie Nights meets Argo operation?
But then I giggled.
Though, my stock in Lockheed Martin did nudge higher over the next week.

Re: March 15, 2001
I listened to Al Lewis on the radio that day. I asked my mom to record the game while I was at work listening to the game. I watched the game later that day on VHS. VHS! That's how long ago it was. Sheesh!

Re: March 15, 2001
I was at work in my office in Draper. There were a few fellow USU grads working at that office. We turned on the TV in the conference room and took a couple of hours break to watch the game.
That win, and the sense of hope that the Aggies can play with the top teams in the country in the NCAA tournament it created, has ruined my brackets for 22 years.
On a side note, we got creative in how we scored our brackets in this days - experimenting with how to reward picking upsets, other than just one win, one point type of scoring. We tried;
Applying a multiplier to the round onto the seed of the winning team. The multiplier would increase by ry for each round. If you correctly picked a 2 seed to beat a 15 seed in the first round, you got 2 points. But if you correctly picked the 15 seed, you got 15 points. If you correctly picked the 15 seed in the second round, you got 15x2, or 30 points, and so on.
Then we tried changing the multiplier to double each round; 1, 2, 4, 8, ... this made it a little better for rewarding the people that picked the final 4 grand correctly.

Re: March 15, 2001
I just have to ask...has the 25-point loss to UCLA ever been discussed?
