With the meltdown in Kentucky Calipari might be available for the Huskies.

With NIL and free transfers, Calipari has lost all his advantages.

Probably but sec teams seem to blow more money than the mwc gets in a year on things like firing a coach. They seem to have no price aversion.

Ftr I agree. I don’t think they will- but fans aren’t happy even before the loss. High expectations.

ay Wright made a great observation. He said the day of getting one and done high school phenoms and winning against teams that are rostered by grown men are over. I think his point is with the money being handed out, kids are staying around and playing at age 23-25 instead of 18.

Kentucky also could give in and agree to a lower or no buyout if Washington wants him and they think a different coach could do better.

That is interesting, I didn't think about the Blue Bloods having the advantage of keeping good talent on their rosters longer with NIL. They have had to rebuild when their phenoms go to the NBA, now they can keep them longer. First world problems.

extension to 2027, I'd say that means Pope is staying at ybu. I guess he was either told he wasn't getting the UDub job, or Ybu backed up another truckload of money on his front porch.

Going to need a newer link than 2020 to suggest any kind of extension for Pope.

A 4-year buyout from Ybu? That's going to cost UDub a grundle. I doubt they are willing to come up with that kind of scratch to buyout ybu for Pope.

It's 2024, so it's a 3 year buyout, which is shorter than what Sprinkle has left and completely normal as far as buyouts go.

You are right, my bad. Still I bet it's more $$ to buy out Pope than Sprinkles.

I am guessing that is where Pope was willing to deal, by paying some of his buyout to get out of BYU. I don't think Pope ends up at Washington. I think the search is over and has been over since late February.

I am hoping that the latest post from @raggie is similar in nature to his post about sprinkle back in late February. :notworthy:

I'm not so sure. buying sprinkle out of 4 years and buying pope out of 3 years could end up being a wash. buyouts often taper down the closer you are to the end of the contract. Sprinkle has a very steep buyout percentage right now. Pope's buyout could be something like 50% of his remaining salary (3 years) where sprinkles is still 75%. If that's the case (and it's an assumption, so it might not be), Pope would need to be making over 2 million dollars per year to break even with Danny's buyout.

So I've got some bets out with folks around town where I am betting that Sprinkle leaves and the others say he stays (they got 5:1 odds)...

The person I wagered with who is closest to the coaching staff called up this morning wanting to quadruple the bet. I pressed for information as to why but got nothing.

So take that for what it is worth, which probably isn't much, but it has me wondering if something has shifted the calculus.

Is the bet that he leaves for Washington? Or that he leaves in general? Even if we dodge WA, others may come calling. Obviously I'd love to keep Sprinkle and the core players coming back. Even if it's just one more year.

I’m still not sure what the damn bet was. Raggie was giving someone 5:1 odds that sprinkle goes? So raggie pay 5x the bet if sprinkle stays? Now they want to quadruple the bet because they think he’ll stay? That’s what I understood. But gambling jargon has always been lost on me.

Stating the obvious but if we could somehow win a few games in the tourney AND keep Sprinkle one more year - it'd propel the program forward in a big way. Especially considering the incoming class and the team returning. IF we lost him the following year, the blow wouldn't be as severe as it'd be bit of a retooling year anyway. 🤞

Mark Pope happened.
Does Mark know?
