Keys to Beating Purdue
1. No easy post passes to Eddy.
2. Johnson/Sako will have to play tough 1on1 D and box out like their life depends on it.
3. Guards have to stay out on shooters.
4. Run in transition, could be a good game for Falslev.
5. Osobor needs to FEAST! He has the foot work and post moves to score around Eddy. Think Carlos Boozer vs Yao Ming in the playoffs. Honestly, I hope the put Eddy on him.
I believe that we will win!

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
Sako will have to have one of his better games, #1.
#2, we need to exploit Osobor again. Edey won't guard him. And even if Edey guards him, Osobor can still score on him.
#3, we still need Darius Brown to show he's the best guard on the floor just like he did tonight.
#4 guard their shooters/get turnovers and get out and run.

Their point guard is small and not super athletic but is a good shooter and facilitator. Brown should own that match up.AggieFBObsession wrote: ↑March 22nd, 2024, 11:35 pmSako will have to have one of his better games, #1.

I think we need to just attack the rim. Make Edey defend on every possession. Just go right at his chest. He'll get a lot of blocks, but he's bound to foul and tire over time.
And I agree with others - push the temp in transition. Make him run the court.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
Try to stay out of foul trouble, especially the bigs. Edey gets officiated differently than any other player in the game. He draws fouls like crazy but they don’t call many against him.
Note: I’m not trying to blame the refs before the game even starts, just pointing out what everyone in the country minus the Purdue fans have been saying all year. I think Aaron Torres has been the most vocal about it.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
This was discussed by the announcers in their last game. They talked about not fouling him and make him keep running. You foul him and he gets to take his jolly sweet time at the FT line and catch his breath. Just play D straight up. He is going to score but get that ball right back in and start running. Get Great out in the open ahead of him for easy layups. Also, while he is running, he is most susceptible to getting fouls. Use that.Yossarian wrote:I think we need to just attack the rim. Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
Looking at the close games and loses by Purdue, we need to be 50% from three, solid assist numbers, perfect from free throw line.
It's a tall order, literally, but not impossible, just improbable

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
We're going to foul plenty. Look at Wisconsin's box score in their win over Purdue. They had all of their bigs in foul trouble, if not fouled out.BiocatAg wrote: ↑March 23rd, 2024, 5:58 amTry to stay out of foul trouble, especially the bigs. What that means is that Osobor, Johnson, Sako and possibly Templin are going to be dealing with foul trouble throughout the game. Johnson, Sako and Templin are going to have to guard/foul by committee.
Another thing you'll notice by looking at their box scores is that Edey is getting 25 points or more and 15 rebounds or more in wins, but they're not winning by large margins against good teams. They're mostly shooting better than 40% from three.
We're one of the top 3 teams in the country at guarding the three point shot. One of the biggest keys to this game is keeping them below 31% from three.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
If he Eddy is guarding Johnson then we need fish to hit some 3s. If he guards osabor then we need to give osabor space to operate, hopefully draw some fouls.
I'm not sure how we stop him. We gotta be tough on defense and rebound the ball, box him out.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
Everyone is assuming Purdue will play a lot of man to man. No!
Go watch the tape of them playing Wisconsin in the big 10 tournament.
They'll be playing a 2-3 zone defense against us
We'll need to knock down threes and get offensive rebounds. Thus we need Sakho to play well in this one.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
Purdue does not run. That's mixed news for us.
They are the 4th best team scoring off cuts. We are 330 in defending it.
They post up 20% of the time. I assume that's the most in ncaa as the average is 7%. Post up D is our best defense. They spot up shoot 23% of the time. That's our second best defense.
On defense, they are solid but not elite at post up defense. They're very bad at defending the cut, but their worst defense is defending off the screen.
They do not force turnovers on defense but they are elite on offense, very very good in half court defense, and rebound at an elite level on offense. They also don't foul on defense.
If we win it will be because Edey gets in foul trouble, we space the floor well, and we rebound very well on both ends. I don't think it's in the cards but 3 of their 4 losses are from teams outside the top 30 and the fourth is a loss to one and done wisconsin.

Edey will get his 25. The key will be limiting the others from going off. Our big guys got to limt as much as possible getting in foul trouble.

Don't let him get entry pases and aggressive boxing out and rebounding from everyone on the team. Our guards have to be dialed in.

Re: Keys to Beating Purdue
I think it almost funny how every game this year the announcers would say that USU can't run, and that we are a half-court offensive team. Stew coached for so long that that is all the announcers can see when they look at the Aggies. For anybody that has actually watch the Aggies this year, we are best when we are running, and getting fast break points. When we run, we are good! And then when we slow down for a series or two, we are even better. When we "hurry" in the half-quart offense we are not good, but when we run, I don't think anybody can compete with us.

Run, let Edey have his, neutralize the role players.
Hit our threes. Edey will block our shots. Let Great beat him off the dribble. Lots of dunks!!

The problem I see here is that it’s a mid afternoon game. Sakho will be on an empty stomach and without water.

also edey is going to do edey things. We need to just run in transition and make sure the other role players don't have good games. Also need to not foul edey. They play zone so if we can make threes and make them switch to man that would be so nice. I believe that we can win.
