Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
He has 2-3 junior guards and a freshman big that all have good numbers. The freshman big would be the guy I like most.ronburgandee wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 11:08 amWhat players would/could he bring? What more do all of you know about him?

However they all are Midwest kids, would they want to come to Utah?

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
I see lots of positives with Kowalczyk, but perhaps my favorite is that he's 57 and has been at both of his HC gigs for 8+ years. Can't imagine a guy like that would be looking to bolt soon after getting here.
Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
It does worry me, however, that he's had eight regular season titles at Toledo and never once qualified for the NCAA tournament because his teams flame out when it matters in the conference tournament. He's also been to five NIT's and never won a game there.
That's very concerning.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Good thing is that the MW is a multi bid conference, if he wins the regular season title every year he will be in March every year here.shoresy wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 11:25 amIt does worry me, however, that he's had eight regular season titles at Toledo and never once qualified for the NCAA tournament because his teams flame out when it matters in the conference tournament. I wouldn't hate this hire, but I do think we could do better than a guy who has coached 700 games without a single postseason win (outside of one CBI and one CIT win) to show for it.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
What worries me about Kowalczyk is that even though he won the MAC 4 years straight, he never qualified for the Big Dance. How is that possible? On the plus side, he could bring 3 or 4 good players with him. One a point guard and one a big. Both are legit.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
I refuse to believe any coach coming here is in for the long haul. I don’t care what they say, I refuse to believe it.
Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Our message board and the Spectrum floor is named after a guy who only had 1 NCAA win. Not saying he is the guy to hire but consistently winning 20+ games a season is not a bad quality in a coach. There should be more opportunity for post season success in the MWC.

After Smith and especially Sprinkle, I am calling BS on any talk of here for the longterm from any coach.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
I would be totally fine with this hire. Unlike last year, there really isn't a name out there that gets me really pumped like Sprinkle's name did.
Kowalczyk is a proven winner with far less resources and tradition than we have. We could do a lot worse. I think he's perhaps slightly more exciting to me than Simon, but I'd be good with either. No one is jumping out to me. I was excited about the idea of Riley, but 22 poo-poo-ed that one.

Too many consonants. I picture him as the super of a run- down brownstone apartment building or the forklift operator at the lumber yard that likes to work on cars in the garage in his spare time.

Never made the tournament in 22 years and he’s older, we’ve had 3 straight decent hires of younger HCs
But since you’re asking I’m guessing it’s close to done

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
He would be the oldest coach we have hired in at least 30 plus years. I thought we were looking for someone young and energetic. He is 10 years older than that old guy coaching at Indiana State.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
LOL. Well done. Speaking of age- one thing I've noticed is the stark difference in the age of our fanbase. A lot of fans that were around to see Estes play... not much in between, then late 20s early 30s fans.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 12:23 pmNope. That's for sure. Just as long as we don't hire a young, unmarried up-and-comer who likes the nightlife, I think we're okay.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Kowalczyk from what i’ve heard is a done deal unless something changes. Was done before Sprinkle left. Expect most of current roster to enter portal including Mason Falslev. (No he’s not going to an in state rival)

If this is the case, I'm thrilled we were so far out in front of this.aggiefan20003 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 12:44 pmKowalczyk from what i’ve heard is a done deal unless something changes. Also, remember, Kowalczyk has been winning consistently at a place with far less resources, support, and tradition than here. One would expect he would do better with more resources. Craig Smith had been to zero tourneys before he arrived too, and he did great here.
I prefer a Kowalczyk or a Simon to re-tread from a P5 that did poor enough to get fired with more resources than we have here. I also really like that if Kowalczyk hits, he's old enough already that he probably retires here.
