Yeah, in college basketball, you should never, ever hire a coach with a long, Polish last name that is difficult to spell or pronounce. Particularly if this last name starts with a "K." Those coaches never work out.
Just in case my sarcasm was too subtle.

I don’t know how this could be. Normally when our AD takes a month to hire a new coach, I’m told that’s just how long these things take and we have to waste, I mean spend a couple hundred thousand on a search firm.aggiefan20003 wrote:Kowalczyk from what i’ve heard is a done deal unless something changes. Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Seems like it would be a solid hire. I think all things being equal Simon might have more upside but also the possibility of less stability. Simon also has a decade of experience of coaching/recruiting in the West which i think is beneficial. Kowalczyk has been a consistent 20 win coach at Toledo. If he does that at USU with the strength of the MWC we will be in contention for NCAAT berths like we have been consistently.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 12:51 pmIf this is the case, I'm thrilled we were so far out in front of this.aggiefan20003 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 12:44 pmKowalczyk from what i’ve heard is a done deal unless something changes. Also, remember, Kowalczyk has been winning consistently at a place with far less resources, support, and tradition than here. One would expect he would do better with more resources. Craig Smith had been to zero tourneys before he arrived too, and he did great here.
I prefer a Kowalczyk or a Simon to re-tread from a P5 that did poor enough to get fired with more resources than we have here. I also really like that if Kowalczyk hits, he's old enough already that he probably retires here.

So? He coaches with energy, is a proven winner, and if anything his age is an advantage because he may want to stay longer than 3 years.

Young, up-and-comer is the formula that has worked. Older dudes don't have the same fire and energy. Less energy particular for guys who are financially stable which, I'm assuming, this guy is.FootballAgg wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 1:09 pmSo? Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
I hope not. This guy seems the exact opposite of what we are looking for. Has he even taken a team to the NCAA tournament? Played in Minnesota and mostly from the East coast.
We have to do better than this plus we need someone from the west coast. This hire would be very underwhelming and if the is the AD first hire we are in deep (I can't express myself without swearing).
Let Bovee find someone again.
This can’t be our guy. Please no!

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Craig Smith had never taken a team to the NCAA tournament. This profile is similar to his but with a longer track record of success. This guy has turned around two programs and made them into consistent winners with few resources. I would feel good about this guy. Simon as well.
This guy is in a 1-bid league for his whole career. Wouldn't be the case here.

My guess is this is because Danny let the department know before hand he was taking the Washington job, letting them go look for a new coach. Also Diana happens to be from Toledo…2004AG wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 12:58 pmI don’t know how this could be. Yeah, I'm pretty out on this hire, if true.
I do see a lot of positives, and I'd be willing to wait and see before passing any hard judgement, but a team with the success we've had in recent years and the money we're able to offer to a coach should be able to do a little bit better than a guy who has never coached an NCAA tournament game in his 22 seasons as a head coach.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
It's highly possible that Toledo didn't make it to the NCAA tournament this year because Kowalczyk has been focusing on landing the job at USU for the past couple of months. Isn't that what we're looking for? A coach that is committed to our program.
