BG the 2 prior years to Simon had 11 and 13 wins. In his first year he got them to 20 wins. At SUU he went from literally the worst team in the country when he arrived to top 125 in ken pom ranking before he left. He coached in Utah for 6ish years so his wife and family know the culture, he also coached at UNLV so will have good ties to recruiting out west. I don't think it is a splashy hire but a solid one at that. My first choices would have been Devries or Kelsey but they are taking bigger jobs.SpectrumMagic wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 11:36 amReally not sure how to feel about this. It was pre-transfer portal era at SUU, so it is the traditional long rebuild.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 11:52 amI think Simon is solid. BG the 2 prior years to Simon had 11 and 13 wins. Utah State Basketball Twitter account is following Simon and a handful of Bowling Green assistant coaches? Seems like the biggest giveaway so far because there’s otherwise no reason that would’ve happened.

I looked online for his contract details. I am guessing he was making 450-500k at BG.

Is anybody else underwhelmed? He is slightly above .500 for his coaching career. I get that he is a family man and gives us a better chance of keeping him in Logan for a while but he hasn't really done anything super impressive?

I worked with him at SUU. He’s got a good vision, wants players with a motor mindset. Impressive coach, probably should have been at UNLV instead of SUU. I think he’s solid as can be if it is him.

He has a lot of west coast recruiting connections and turned SUU from an absolute doormat to a winning program.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:12 pmIs anybody else underwhelmed? I like it better than getting another Midwest guy who would either bounce right away or a coach who hasn’t made the tourney in 20 years IMO
Simon still has upside here. Question is who can he convince to stay and who can he bring in right away

Re: Press Conference Tuesday
I'm not. I'm excited. He spent a lot years at Findlay Prep in Vegas and has great recruiting connections out West from that. I also posted this about him a few weeks ago:Winning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:12 pmIs anybody else underwhelmed? He is slightly above .500 for his coaching career. *Todd Simon, Bowling Green - He was the 2021 Big Sky coach of the year at SUU and then jumped to Bowling Green for a pay increase. His 1st season at Bowling Green was mediocre, but at SUU he was considered a hot young coach. He also spent 1/2 season as UNLV's interim head coach in 2016. SUU was Kenpom ranked #342 when he took over and he got them up to #111. He was the first coach ever to have 3 20-win seasons in a row at SUU. I've heard he wants to get back out West. He's 43 years old.

Re: Press Conference Tuesday
The other HUGE plus that Simon brings is his recruiting network and connections in the industry. From the significant amount of time he spent at Findlay Prep and UNLV, he has significant ties with AAU coaches and coaches at programs throughout the west.FootballAgg wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:14 pmCheck the success of SUU and Bowling Green before he arrived.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:12 pmIs anybody else underwhelmed? He was the national coach of the year just three years back and has continued to have consistent success since that point. I think this is a solid hire.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:12 pmIs anybody else underwhelmed? He is slightly above .500 for his coaching career. He's also beat USU in the Spectrum as head coach. He was the interim coach at UNLV in early 2016 when they beat us in Logan.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:17 pmI'm not. I'm excited. Re: Press Conference Tuesday
SUU was #342 (out of 351) on KenPom when he took over. By the time he left, they had three 20-win seasons in a row. And it was basically steady improvement as well. Over the course of 7 seasons, his win total increased every season but his last season (when it dropped from 23 to 22). I take it as a sign that he knows how to build a program.Winning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:12 pmIs anybody else underwhelmed? He is slightly above .500 for his coaching career. Well considering UVU gave Dorius $40k NIL & a car, I'm guessing UVU made him an NIL offer that we didn't.MetsJetsAggies wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:18 pmTurned down Sprinkle or wanted to be near Provo you think?aggies22 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:15 pmDanny offered him last year.MetsJetsAggies wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:14 pmhttps://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... rake-allen

Considering how poorly this kid shot from the 3 this year though I'm not sure he's up to the level of player we need to compete in the MWC. I want no part of unathletic 6'4" guard shooting 23% from the 3.

Does anyone know how many bowling green players still have eligibility, they have a couple of seniors I’d take who may have a Covid year left
Wonder how many guys he can get to stick around, he may have chatted with some while he was at SUU

My business partner who is a huge UNLV fan (seriously, he has to be the biggest UNLV fan there is - follows both football and basketball closely) was really upset that UNLV didn't hire Simon after they fired Dave Rice.

I guess my only counter is that he isn't taking over a losing program. He is taking over a powerhouse that isn't just wanting to win but compete at the national level in the tournament. He hasn't done any of that. 3pt percentage is likely small sample variance, he was 36% the year before which is better than Uduje, etc when we brought them in.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:20 pmWell considering UVU gave Dorius $40k NIL & a car, I'm guessing UVU made him an NIL offer that we didn't.MetsJetsAggies wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:18 pmTurned down Sprinkle or wanted to be near Provo you think?aggies22 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:15 pmDanny offered him last year.MetsJetsAggies wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:14 pmhttps://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... rake-allen

He’s a good point guard with size and is from Utah, would take him in a NY minute.

Transfer portal era history with us
Sprinkle got Burris, Brown, and Osobor, and he had connections with Washington (Jackson Grant). Sprinkle had offered Uduje years ago. Hill had Martinez, so we got Martinez. Players outside the circle were Javon Jackson and Max.
Odom got RJ Eytle-Rock, Dan Akin, and Horvath. Odom had offered Funk years before getting Funk on the Aggies.
I would expect Simon has his connections with the WAC, MAC, and Big Sky.

Harder to recruit to SUU and Bowling Green than Utah State. I’m all for giving him a shot at this level, and he has Utah ties so won’t be job seeking in FebruaryWinning Team wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:20 pmI guess my only counter is that he isn't taking over a losing program.
