Retaining those coaches and players would make me team Jerrod Calhoun pretty goddamn fast.

Yo if he really keeps especially Haslam then count me all the way in. An overseas recruiting pipeline would do wonders for Utah State.

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
Someone is going to have to convince me here. Looking at his record, why are we excited about this, but we're not excited about Toledo Tod? Doesn't look like he has had any post season success, has been good but not great in a weak conference.

Well, if he’s going to retain staff and the players listed that’s a lot to like already.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:14 pmSomeone is going to have to convince me here. Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
I would generally agree. Took him quite a while to show true progress at Youngstown and I'd be worried about him sustaining any long term success. But if he keeps Haslam and the core then my opinion is different.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:14 pmSomeone is going to have to convince me here. So we could hire Eric Duft and everyone would immediately jump on board if he retained the coaching staff and players?ineptimusprime wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:15 pmWell, if he’s going to retain staff and the players listed that’s a lot to like already.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:14 pmSomeone is going to have to convince me here. I'm actually really smart, probably smarter than you are so if you disagree with what I have stated in this post, you are likely wrong (and dumb).

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
Calhoun's current contract says that he's not able to recruit any of the same HS players of he takes a new job.

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
I am not sure that we are in the running for anyone who would impress some of you guys. Some have said he reminds them of Smith before coming here.
We have yet to dissect his offensive and defensive numbers, so we have lots to learn about him before jumping to conclusions.

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
It might mean he can recruit well, which is basically half the job at this point. And now player retention is equally as important as recruiting. He built a legitimate winner at the D2 level.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:19 pmWhy? Does that make him a good coach?AggiePharm wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:18 pmI would generally agree. Do I think there were better candidates on paper? I would hope so given the state of the program, but it would be off to a start that I can at least buy in to.

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
To be clear I am absolutely willing to give him a chance. I certainly don't hate it. I just want someone to tell me why I should be excited. What makes this a good hire beyone him keeping the old staff and retaining players.JonnyCienPesos wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:19 pmImpressing you all is an impossible task.

I kind of always thought that hiring a coach because they are likely to keep the players around was not a great long term play. And so far that is they only reason anyone has given me to be excited.

Re: Jerrod Calhoun!!!
If it was a former assistant keeping players, that would be one thing. But a new guy keeping a team is impressive if he can pull it off.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑March 29th, 2024, 7:23 pmTo be clear I am absolutely willing to give him a chance. I certainly don't hate it. Too much judgement on previous records and not enough faith in the notion that our program, spectrum, and the fans elevate coaches ability to recruit better players from their previous jobs. IMOJonnyCienPesos wrote:Impressing you all is an impossible task.
