Re: Great Osobor
Does brings up an interesting question: how do foreign college athletes get paid? Don't they have to have a work visa? I doubt they came here on a work visa, so how do they report their earnings to the IRS, etc????

Any player would be smart to say this even if they knew that they were 100% gone:
That comment doesn't mean $hit one way or the other.Osobor says he will also consider a return to USU as he explores his options in the portal.

I can tell you this, the NIL dough that the big 3 or 4 got this year, was kept VERY hush, hush. Not even the other dudes on the team knew who got how much.TrueAG wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 2:00 pmYeah I know but in some ways this may be more risky. It's out in the open, people will know about it. Re: Great Osobor
Agreed. And I certainly don't understand the infatuation to grovel, throw money at, and kiss the feet of some 20 year-old kid to come and play an amateur sport at my university for a year. This whole thing is nuts. What are we doing?newhouse9 wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 2:04 pmThat's pretty much what I'm saying. Let them go, wish them well.Yossarian wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:37 pmJust out of curiosity, why should these athletes be given any more of a congratulations or well wishes than a regular student that decides to transfer to another school? The athletes have already had their school paid for and now get NIL money on top of that for doing absolutely nothing in return (as near as I can tell) - what more do we owe them? Yes, they wire the USU jersey and played ball, but they don't care about the school or you and me. I shrug my shoulders and move on with my life. They do the same.

I think this is the way college sports is headed if they don't do something. NO contracts, not limits...if anyone has a good season, they'll shop for more money every year. Why wouldn't they? Do their agents check courses to keep these mercenaries on track to get a diploma as they bilk these universities out of tuition money? Re: Great Osobor
They already have that, it's called the G-league. No one cares or watches it because it's not artificially attached to a University. It's still new enough and we are all programmed to root for our schools no matter what but this will kill basketball. Football probably withstands it but Men's college basketball is already on life support.justinmorrey wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 2:39 pmContracts are coming. I don't know, why did Ryan Odom leave Maryland to come to Utah State, only to bounce right back? People do stuff like that all the time. Leave home and their family only to realize they miss it and want to go back.Yossarian wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 2:49 pmSo closer to Northern Virginia? All I did was ask if that was potential driving force in Martinez wanting to leave USU regardless of who the coach was.

Re: Great Osobor
I don't remember a time he missed on someone leaving. He has missed on what schools they leave for, but not that they leave at all. One thing we can somewhat count as a miss was that Pat Joyner was staying after all, but even that was after being right the first time telling us he was leaving. He was quiet about Ike the last go around, but after the 2022 season, he was telling us accurately all along he was staying.

They say they aren't ruling out a return just in case they don't get the offers they anticipate. Steven, on the day he announced he was going to Creighton, listed his final 6 or 8 or so final schools, and along with BYU, listed returning to USU as one of them.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:24 pmDidn't Steven say the same thing?JonnyCienPesos wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:21 pmGreat hasn’t ruled out a return.

Do you think where he goes matters as much to him as how much money someone would be willing to pay him? I don't think the guys are looking at "fit", "culture:, "head coach/mentor", "playing time", or "a chance to grow as a person and player",, "to be closer to home/family", or any of the other reasons people gave for transferring in the past anymore. They are looking to get paid, regardless of where that is.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 3:07 pmIf he leaves, I'm super curious to see where an 8 ppg 27% 3pt shooter goes in the transfer portal.

I would bet anything we'll see a drop in Great's production next year and a frustrated fan base at times, even though he's a year older and should be even better with another offseason to improve his skills and strength/conditioning.

Sorry. I did understand what you were saying. I just added my commentary in, as well. If Dorius was able to get $60K out of UVU, as reported, there may be someone willing to throw a little stupid money at a poor shooting, but athletic, wing player that didn't start at USU. I hope he finds what he's looking fur.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 3:14 pmYou completely misunderstood my post. Agreed. And there is now a lot of film on Osobor available. A good coaching staff at P5 schools will have the ability to gameplan better for him and will have the size and athleticism to defend him. I would not be surprised to see his production drop dramatically.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 3:16 pmI would bet anything we'll see a drop in Great's production next year and a frustrated fan base at times, even though he's a year older and should be even better with another offseason to improve his skills and strength/conditioning.

Re: Great Osobor
A broad statement that is difficult to prove. Some want fit and culture AND money. It would be illogical to assume they all want the same thing. I’ve chased money before. I didn’t love how it turned out. So you might even have a few who don’t care about the money.Yossarian wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 3:11 pmDo you think where he goes matters as much to him as how much money someone would be willing to pay him?
