You know, I can forgive Craig Smith for leaving USU for a larger paycheck. But coming back to Cache Valley while wearing a Utah shirt is a truly low blow.justinmorrey wrote: ↑April 12th, 2024, 10:37 pmHe did. A hoodie. And under it a red shirt was peeking out. The larger paycheck isn’t why most of us wouldn’t forgive him. Fortunately for us it’s worked out so far that we don’t have to be terribly bitter. Just a little bitter. And no more petty than usual.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑April 13th, 2024, 2:18 pmYou know, I can forgive Craig Smith for leaving USU for a larger paycheck. Re: Current State of USU Basketball
There’s some logic to Josh waiting on Ian with them both going into their respective last years of eligibility — I totally get the wanting to start angle. Would love to have either of them back.
I actually hope this is true. I feel really good about a core of Falslev/Johnson/Uduje or Martinez with another year of development + Albury. Just an Osobor return or a solid 5 man and some depth away from being really good next year.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Uduje had worked his way into a very valuable role as 6th man. A good 6th man is equally as important as a starter. I really like Josh and what he brings to the team in a lot of different facets. I hope Ian stays and Josh can accept being another conference 6th man of the year type player. Maybe average more minutes than last year though.

Really like Uduje and Martinez.
Any change Calhoun would play small ball minutes? Martinez or Falslev at the 4?
One injury away from from coming off the bench to starting

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
In 2005 Villanova ran a similar lineup extremely effectively. They were a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament & ranked #1 a lot of the season.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑April 14th, 2024, 8:53 pmA 6'3" Power Forward?trevordude wrote: ↑April 14th, 2024, 8:36 pmReally like Uduje and Martinez.

G, Randy Foye (remember this former Jazzman that played guard?) played their 4 on defense most the season and he was only 6’4”.
Their starting lineup all played at least 28 minutes/game and this was their heights:
6’0”
6’2”
6’2”
6’4”
6’8”

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
I would love to have both Ian and Josh return. I actually think there is plenty of time between Ian, Mason and Josh. Realistically those three would take care of two positions for the game. If you split them evenly it's about 26 and 1/2 minutes. If there is a choice between the two I would probably choose Martinez just because of his scoring ability when he is on. Although I think Josh is a little bit more consistent game in and game out.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
I do believe that we could have the small ball lineup because we have 6'5" Uduje, 6'6" Phelps, and maybe 6'8" Cox. We need to get more shooters, so the whole smaller lineup idea might be a good way to go since we already have Johnson, Templin, Burris, and Jackson Grant here for bigs while we need some size at the guard position.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑April 14th, 2024, 8:53 pmA 6'3" Power Forward?trevordude wrote: ↑April 14th, 2024, 8:36 pmReally like Uduje and Martinez.

We had very good smaller lineup in the 19-20 season with Porter, Merrill, Brito/Miller, Anderson, and Bean

Pretty sure Jordy Barnes will be a walk-on like Jaxon Smith. He was not offered a scholarship from Sprinkle and never "signed" an NLI like Wynott and Hill did. This leaves another scholarship position open for a portal recruit.treesap32 wrote: ↑April 15th, 2024, 2:51 pmHere's a look at the 13=13 list based on aggies22 intel:

It amazes me to this day that Justin Bean was a walk-on.
In the state of Oklahoma top 2 scorers in Bean's senior year
1) Trae Young
2) Justin Bean

So, aren't any players from Youngstown going to follow their coach? Is their young, really tall center, worth a spot?

I'd imagine Coach Calhoun may also be telling these guys to wait and see, right? If Ian/Great come back and we sign one or more of Cox/Wynott/Hill I think we're out of spots. If Ian and/or Great dont' come back, or we miss out on some recruits then we can always go back to these lower level guys. We need to cut a little more fat — really just free up one scholarship. Of course, there needs to be development guys and end of bench guys cause there just aren’t enough minutes to go around, but I’d love to replace a Jackson Grant with a Gabe Dynes, especially if a guy like Dynes can accept a smaller role and situational minutes at least next year.
