Is Calhoun cleaning house gonna mess with team chemistry? I guess he said he wanted to win a natty, not sure how I expected that to look.

Glad we have our 5 man core, but I'm also concerned with chemistry and what talent there is that wants to transfer in and get limited minutes

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Players like Dylan Anderson make sense to pursue.
Anderson is an ex-top 100 recruit that has 3 years left.
Players like Jackson Grant and Nigel Burris looked like Big Sky level players that were complete shock of the higher level of basketball.

It would take a MAJOR shift in recruiting focus for us to end up with Kase Wynott.

I’m all for it, I guess. Get the best available player THIS year. Can’t plan to develop at all. You get the best you can, and hang on to what you can at the end of the season. That’s the new reality.

I like it. I'm all for upgrading talent across the roster. The Wnott thing bums me out because he looks like a dude that can contribute immediately. But we'll see what Calhoun has planned.
If he wants to win a national championship next year, we still need A LOT more star level talent.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
It is so true, developing freshman at USU is a largely going to be a thing of the past. I quite frankly hate it as I love to see players stay for 3-4 years and develop but with the NIL landscape and unlimited transfers it is just not reality anymore.flying_scotsman2.0 wrote: ↑April 20th, 2024, 4:58 pmI’m all for it, I guess. Freshmen — at best we’re scouting for teams with deeper pockets. At worst, we’re wasting a roster spot.
Aside from local kids, I just don’t think freshman recruiting is a good use of our time.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Don’t want to get into specifics but this is not true. A verbal agreement was entered into last year with Ian and the final payment was scheduled to be paid in May of this year after portal closed. Legal council advised that contracts be specific to each payment to protect international players visa status. Due to this there were some frustrations and misunderstandings from Ian and his family, understandingly so. Ian and his family have been great to work with during this portal process and new coaching turnover. With new information and updated legal advice we are able to contract everything up front ahead of time. This has happened in this situation so Ian has everything up front in writing if he chooses to stay an Aggie. Ian has a lot of great options on the table and we really hope that playing in an Aggie uniform is the one he decides. Time will tell.bluegrouse wrote: ↑April 19th, 2024, 11:03 pmDon’t know who this guy is or if he is at all reliable but if this true, it’s a bad look and one we have to fix like yesterday. The goal is to have an average scoring margin over +10.
23-24 season +8.3
22-23 season +8.3
20-21 season +10.2
19-20 season +12.4
18-19 season +11.5
Think of the movie Moneyball on the topic of on-base %

It would be a pretty bold strategy when you have 13 scholarships to fill for the upcoming season to just cut 5-7 guys loose without a set target to backfill simply because they don’t really fit your strategy haha.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:49 amThat, or he just really doesn’t believe in recruiting high school players in the current era, or really doesn’t like any of the HS guys committed.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:40 amThe most logical explanation for this is the fact that Calhoun as other good stuff in the works he needs the scholarships for, right???Aggie702 wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:36 amNow Barnes and Cox are at low? Re: Current State of USU Basketball
The reality of college basketball is that you need 2-4 players to sit the bench and/or redshirt. If you have 13 players that all think they are going to play, you are going to have a miserable locker room.

I think it’s most likely that Calhoun just isn’t a huge fan of the guys that he had committed. Wants to fill the spots with his guys.

I don’t know how this stuff works any more but if a kid signs with us, don’t we have an obligation to take him for at least a year? If not, what’s the purpose of any signing?
Conversely, can a kid that signs with us de-commit for any reason before he gets here (I understand if there’s a coaching change)?

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Coach Calhoun strikes me as the kind of guy who has a plan in place before the moves start being made.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 10:04 amIt would be a pretty bold strategy when you have 13 scholarships to fill for the upcoming season to just cut 5-7 guys loose without a set target to backfill simply because they don’t really fit your strategy haha.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:49 amThat, or he just really doesn’t believe in recruiting high school players in the current era, or really doesn’t like any of the HS guys committed.Roy McAvoy wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:40 amThe most logical explanation for this is the fact that Calhoun as other good stuff in the works he needs the scholarships for, right???Aggie702 wrote: ↑April 21st, 2024, 9:36 amNow Barnes and Cox are at low? Calhoun doesn't like high schoolers at all lolaggies22 wrote: ↑April 4th, 2024, 1:13 pmAfter assessing how things have transpired this week and trying to do as much research as I can, this is my PREDICTION as to who stays, who is going, and who is on the fence. Re: Current State of USU Basketball
I personally think in this new world we live in that it’s a matter of seeing how many and the quality of athletes that are in the portal and comparing what their potential contribution could be as opposed to an unproven freshman. They also have to consider that if the freshman plays and exceeds expectations there is a strong possibility of the freshman transferring to greener pastures. If the freshman does not play the amount of minutes he thinks he should, he will also hit the portal. I feel bad for players like Jordy. Great high school player but not a high level recruit. The only winners are the really high prospects and the Junior colleges and D2 programs that will get these kids.
