Re: Current State of USU Basketball
That's a Great question. I'll see what I can find out. I would guess yes, just because I guess you never know until he's officially gone elsewhere.BasketballAgg wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 6:45 amWill we be leaving a scholarship open for Great??aggies22 wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 6:36 amOnce Carter Welling announces we'll have two schollies left.slcagg wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 6:28 amHow many scholarships does that leave us with who has announced commitments?aggies22 wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 5:56 amJackson Grant will return next season as a walk-on.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 9:12 pmAs a walk on? Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Do you know if he will be on an academic scholarship? Would seem odd for him to want to stay on as a walk on when he could probably go to a big sky, Summit or WAC school on athletic scholarship.aggies22 wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 5:56 amJackson Grant will return next season as a walk-on.OrangeCountyAggie wrote: ↑April 30th, 2024, 9:12 pmAs a walk on? @aggies22, is it possible for a walk-on at USU to receive a small amount of money from the collective or is the collective only used for scholarship athletes?

He's staying because he likes it here, he likes the guys, and he wants to graduate as an Aggie. That would also be my guess. The Collective is a separate entity from USU. The Collective can do as it wishes with the money. Keeping it separate from the University allows it to circumvent the Title 9 rules.

Or could the kid go out and solicit his own NIL by doing advertising for a company? Which is how it should be done in the first place.aggies22 wrote:I think that's entirely up to the collective.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 9:24 amGood question!Aggie84025 wrote: ↑May 1st, 2024, 8:49 amDo you know if he will be on an academic scholarship? Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Possibly? I was told he was staying a week or so ago. I'm thinking he went home and decided to put his name in and see what happens. He can ALWAYS choose to withdraw his name. And accept the preferred walk-on spot here. I'll see what I can find out.

Sam Houston State(C-USA)
UIC (MVC)- Javon Jackson
Utah Tech (WAC)- Dallin Grant
Weber State (Big Sky)- Nigel Burris
It is not like big name schools are going after the ones that completely left us outside of Osobor.

I am happy for all of those guys. They went to situations where they thought they could get on the court more. Hope they all do really well.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
So I got my answer. Jackson Grant will remain in the transfer portal and not return to Utah State. I think he'll end up in the Big Sky. Keep an eye on Weber State.

Interesting, he was taking up a scholarship before and was told he could stay as a walk on by the new staff? No wonder he wants to bolt. Getting the connections with players from Utah and finding a home for players who not MWC level.

Here is a pipedream player that would be awesome to have.
Shot 44% from 3
Fun fact
Deyton Albury and Achor Achor were teammates at Chipola College.

Is it just me or does Burns have one of the fastest releases you've seen? 32.3% from 3 for a 6'9 guy is decent. He also plays in the paint. Let's get him.

Re: Current State of USU Basketball
I bet his 3pt % isn't as good as it could be because he brings the ball down to his knees each time he shoots it. He probably needs to be wide open to shoot a good percentage.Madmartigan wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2024, 10:51 amIs it just me or does Burns have one of the fastest releases you've seen? 32.3% from 3 for a 6'9 guy is decent. Re: Current State of USU Basketball
Are you being facetious? He literally has one of the slowest wind up shooting motions I have ever seen. The final flick of the ball from his hands is short but the long wind up and setting of his feet together is painfully slow. He also shoots from his belly and chest with a weird two foot hop forward. I have already voiced by opinion on Burns but I will repeat: I don't think he would be very effective at the MWC level. He's a below the rim type of player and is not going to be given 8 feet of clear room from the arc to get that slow developing shot off. I think there is reason that Calhoun did not immediately try and pull him over from YSU. It's interesting to compare the programs in his initial "interest" list to his update list.Madmartigan wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2024, 10:51 amIs it just me or does Burns have one of the fastest releases you've seen? 32.3% from 3 for a 6'9 guy is decent. WIth Welling not coming getting Burns would be a really great pickup. We need another big to supplement Auben and Isaac. I am very very concerned about our front court getting absolutely obliterated on the offensive and defense boards, Burns would settle some of those concerns.
