Mountain West vs Big 12

Post by aggieref » April 5th, 2024, 9:30 am

There was a lot of talk during the season about the Big 12 being overrated by the net. Let's see if that was true or not...

Big 12 end of season average net all teams: 46.07
Mountain West end of season average net all teams: 104.73

Big 12 end of season average net for tourney teams: 19
Mountain West end of season average net for tourney teams: 29.33

Big 12 average tourney seed 4.75
Mountain West average tourney seed: 9

Big 12 win/loss record in tourney: 7-8
Mountain West win/loss record in tourney: 4-6

Big 12 tourney wins against higher seeded teams: 0
Mountain West wins against higher seeded teams: 0

Big 12 tourney games where the result was as expected based on seeding: 7
Mountain West tourney games where the result was as expected based on seeding: 10

Big 12 tourney losses against lower seeded teams: 8
Mountain West tourney losses against lower seeded teams: 0

Conclusion: Mountain West performed equal to their seeding in the tournament. Big 12 performed much worse than their seeding in the tournament.

I like the positive spin but we also got embarrassed in the games we lost.

Frankly it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters if winning. We win a game and that’s good enough for me. The conference had a record number of teams in. But we didn’t advance so the only thing that matters to me now is next season. All of us home on our couches with a tournament still going on is the end of it for me.

Agreed, it sucks to not be playing still. I get it. It does make me feel better, though, to know that the conference performed as expected based upon their seeding. We did what we were supposed to do and nothing more. The Big 12 on the other hand laid an egg. They didn't upset anyone, but were upset 8 times.

Ultimately, the Big 12 didn’t beat anybody noteworthy during their non conference season, and they didn’t beat anybody noteworthy during the tournament.

Honestly, the MW really can’t cay that we beat anybody noteworthy outside of conference play either, but the MW also wasn’t trying to say that we were hands down the best conference in the country.

That’s true.

I do think it’s silly to compare. We had slightly more success than the past, largely due to being a bit lucky- and we lost almost all of our production, again. I don’t think successful teams in the Big 12 have that level of struggle, but I haven’t looked into it. I only care about the Aggies. Everything else in college is just sports ball. Go

The MW had wins over Gonzaga, Creighton, St. Mary's, Colorado, TCU and Boston College this year. No clue how that stacks up against the Big 12, but I wouldn't say we didn't beat anybody noteworthy.

Without the postseason, the Big 12 went 5-1 against the MW. Most of the MW losses were bottom 3 teams. The only exception to that is SDSU losing at BYU. The 1 win was Nevada over TCU in Hawaii.

SDSU at BYU, BYU won 74-65
Fresno vs BYU (Delta Center), BYU won 85-56
Wyoming at BYU, BYU won 94-68
San Jose at Texas Tech, TT won 56-42
Wyoming at Texas, Texas won 86-63
Nevada vs TCU (Hawaii), Nevada won 88-75

Thank you-

B12 #5 beat MW #5 by 9, MW #9 by 29, and #8 by 26
B12 #4 beat MW #10 by 14
B12 #7 beat MW #8 by 23
that proves very little...

B12 #8 lost to MW #2 by 13 and MW #1 by 16

MW 1&2 beat B12 #8 on neutral floor by double digits - that should be expected, but TCU was favored in both

And how many MW teams played at home vs B12? Can you say Zero?

You forgot the most important metric of all:

Losses to Duquesne:
B12: 1
MW: 0

The MWC and Big 12 should set up scheduling arrangements.
The Big 12 has now BYU, Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, and Colorado. Big 12 have for Iowa, Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma schools: Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston, TCU, Kansas, and Kansas State

That would require the Big 12 teams to play road games which is something that they won't do.

Neutral site games for college basketball would be not a bad idea.
