I think they'll be buoyed sufficiently by the ri$ing tide of the Big-12, sadly.

The Big 12 is right now Kansas, Arizona, Colorado, Houston, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Cincy, UCF, West Virginia, Arizona State, BYU, Utah, Kansas State, Baylor, and Iowa State.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑April 16th, 2024, 9:49 amI think they'll be buoyed sufficiently by the ri$ing tide of the Big-12, sadly.
Oklahoma and Texas left, but they were not the top teams in the Big 12 when it comes to basketball.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
Question, if BYU hires a head coach that was the top paid assistant coach in the NBA ($2M) that is very highly respected in the NBA, been a finalist for many head coaching jobs, and considered to be getting an NBA head coaching gig very soon, would you still consider them to a be a sinking ship?

Rumor is they may also get Chris Burgess & Barret Peery both on staff as assistants.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
I would add that Young had an alright head coaching record at the G-League (he did get fired once).
Outside of 22, no one has actual sources.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
It is also a high-risk deal for BYU. Young has just one whole year of US college basketball coaching experience.

I'm certain their Cougar Collective will do more to bring in a good roster than their new coach.

Do any of you closet ybu fans feel comfortable moving your conversation over to cougar board? Just so the top three threads aren't about a school with no relation to USU?

Fun fact, someone on this board expose one of the longtime regulars in posting more Cougarboard posts per day than usufans posts per day. There are actual cougarboard people.Winning Team wrote: ↑April 16th, 2024, 11:05 amDo any of you closet ybu fans feel comfortable moving your conversation over to cougar board? I personally have never posted at cougarboard or spent any time there.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
Be interesting to see how his experience translates to college with NIL and high school recruiting. IN the NBA the GM and head coach do that. He is a good X's and O's coach but has very limited experience in recruiting.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
While Young was probably the best option available, I'd be pretty nervous about it if I were a BYU fan. His only college experience came back when Utah Valley State was still a thing. The NBA/G-League and college hoops are a whole different world.
I have no idea if the guy can coach, and he's obviously thought of highly in basketball circles. But it's a pretty risky hire.

He'll be great at the on-court stuff. Who knows about the other stuff. Ryan Smith will probably buy Chris Burgess for them, though, and he'll handle the recruiting.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
I think BYU’s new coach is a huge upgrade over Pope.
BYU wasn’t a real threat with Pope.
Totally different vibe and feel with Young.

Re: Pope to Kentucky
maybe, but he has never been a head coach, has never been involved in D1 athletics in anyway whatsoever, has never recruited, and has never dealt with NIL or the portal. He has a lot of other strengths, but if he can't figure out how do do those things (or hire somebody who can do them for him), it could go a lot of different ways.

The problem is that a chair could do a half decent job at recruiting to byu... for a lot of kids it does not matter who is recruiting them, they will still go to byu3rdGenAggie wrote: ↑April 16th, 2024, 11:35 amHe'll be great at the on-court stuff.
