I’m ok with this. I think Calhoun can bring in someone ready to compete now.

Wow that guy is stepping up his game, if true. He is definitely the first person I heard it from. Now just the question of whether it’s legit or not.

He’s now reporting that Phelps is being “pushed out” by coach Calhoun and that he wanted to and has been committed to staying at USU since Sprinkle left, kind of a bummer if true

Re: Phelps - did a spot just open?
Who knows if that is true but if anyone needs to be counseled out it is Grant. I just don't see him being able to play at the MWC level. Put him at ISU or Idaho and i bet he could be a solid contributor. Phelps i believe has the athleticism to compete at the MW level especially on defense but who knows if his offense would be able to.

Looking at some of this person's tweets he seems to have a slight grudge against USU just based off his tweets. I have a hard time trusting someone who doesn't associate their name with the tweets they publish. Why i have mad respect for Aggies 22 since he puts his name out there.EngineeringAggie wrote: ↑April 19th, 2024, 7:17 pmWow that guy is stepping up his game, if true. With NIL and open transfers, you have to push players out to make room for players you’re able to recruit. If the top of the roster is leaving, the bottom of the roster has to be cleared as well. It’s another downside of NIL.

Re: Phelps - did a spot just open?
It’s a 2-way street. If players want to be paid $ like the professionals they are and be able to transfer to whichever school they wish to play for at the drop of a hat then it’s only fair that they be subject to competing every year for a roster spot. USU is not running a charity.
I’d love to roll back the clock to a time that commitments were honored and loyalty was extended both ways. But those days are over.

Any chance Calhoun is opening up NIL money for Ian with this move? I’m not sure what Phelps was getting, but maybe it was $25k or so.

For those who don’t have Twitter. Don’t know who this guy is and no idea if it’s accurate but this is what he posted as Aggie84025 said.

I hope @ineptimusprime isn't too sad about this news. He feels upset when coaches counsel out players that aren't going to have an impact.

Re: Phelps - did a spot just open?
Phelps was a question mark in my mind. I am neither happy nor sad.
Generally speaking, I believe a few things:
(1) in a system where your top players are being poached annually by wealthier programs and there is zero loyalty, the school/coach needs to have the flexibility to encourage the end of the roster non-rotation guys to move on;
(2) guys ultimately want to play. While I am sure Burris, Phelps, and Grant all think they have the talent to carve out a role here, the guy whose job depends on it seems to disagree. While painful and though I feel for them on a human level, I think everyone being counseled out is ultimately going to have a better experience going somewhere they are actually going to play.
I think it’ll all work out for the best. Wish them all well!
