I've only heard one other announcer lose it like that

Not exactly. We know womens softball and women's volleyball have won NC's.

I am pretty sure we have an actual NCAA championship in either softball, volleyball or gymnastics. I recall seeing a banner in the Spectrum when I was a kid.

AIAW nationals champions 1980 & 1981 for softball

1978 volleyball lost the title the next year to Hawaii

AIAW went away in 1982 when NCAA picked up women's sports

I think one of those teams won two national championships -- perhaps the volleyball team? Jay Don Blake also won the national championship in golf as an Aggie. Probably other titles of which I am unaware.

As others have pointed out, softball had back to back actual national championships, at the highest division. Volleyball also won one.
