Block A Logo

Post by Real Life Aggie » August 11th, 2023, 11:25 am

I wanted to see if anyone knew anything about the history (timing, implementation, registration, etc.) of the Bbock A logo that we use.

I moved to Tucson last year, and people at U of A really like their block A logo. It's pretty similar to ours, except it has a red A on the inside. Previous renditions included logos that were far less distinct. I've just been interested in timing with respect to the block A, such as whether ours came first, or similarities prompted changes.

I wore an aggie hat to an arizona game last year and everybody thought it was a U of A hat.

Exactly. When I first saw their block A, I couldn't help but wonder if they'd put in the red A in the middle to differentiate it from ours.

When USU was established, we were the Agricultural College of Utah. That changed to the Utah State Agricultural College in 1929.

Athletic jerseys and other apparel featured the initials UAC, or sometimes just A.

My grandma used to ask me clear into the mid 1990's how things were going up at "the AC."

I don't know when the A was installed on the top of Old Main, but it's been an icon of the school for a long time.

Interesting. I wish he'd included some examples of the historic word marks.

I'd seen both of these sites previously, but they fail to actually show the traditional logos amidst the cavalcade of pop-ups and ads. The "A" emblem used by either university is not the same one we know today. Looking at historical pictures shows the difference is significant. Before the current rendition, UA's block A was red. Before that, it had been blue at some point in a very similar font to USU's. As far as our block A goes, I'm less certain. It's shape/font seems to be more consistent (thanks to Old Main and the True Aggie block A), but I don't know if the color has always been blue. Old Main/Block A sculpture seem to indicate it was white at one point.
