New Mascot
New Mascot
So I was talking to some Aggie family members tonight while watching the bowls, about college mascots and how there needs to be more creativity with mascots (think minor league baseball or UC-system). On top of that, there should only be one of each mascot at each level (FBS, FCS, DII, DIII, JUCO), and the schools with human mascots should make them an animal dressed as the mascot (get rid of Purdue’s and Wake Forest’s monstrosities).
So given those rules, who gets the Aggies and if it’s not us what do we rebrand as?
My vote is the Grizzlies and use Ol Ephraim in a kilt with blue paint across the face as the mascot.

Re: New Mascot
Would not happen. Way too many schools and not enough mascots. And who is going to tell all the teams in the SEC that they can't all be tigers anymore.
But in your scenario, no chance we come away with Aggies, when Texas a&m is around. I would go with Scotsmen.

Re: New Mascot
yea like UC Riverslide
Just throw a kilt onto Big Blue, problems solved. Or if PETA ever gives us grief for humanizing a farm animal, we can always adopt this guy as our Mascot:

Re: New Mascot
The change was the brainchild of Gerald Sherritt, who was then a VP at USU. He was furious about the reception his idea received.
He later became President of SUU. After he retired as President he became Mayor of Cedar City. As Mayor, he was a thorn in the side of the University. He knew the history of all the deals and agreements.

Re: New Mascot
Yeah that’s the conclusion we came to as well but it would be nice to switch out some bulldogs, tigers, and knights, for moose, yeti, and scorpions (among other good ideas we had).LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 7:34 amWould not happen. I read an article a few months back that talked about why there were so many repeats and basically it came down to a merchandising company would travel around with 10 different options and they would just choose what they wanted.

New Mascot
Interesting topic. Would be hard to depart with the Aggies but if forced to choose a different nickname, maybe the Blue Herons, which is native to Cache Valley. Keep the current colors and put the Blue Heron in a kilt.

Re: New Mascot
Although Beaver Mountain would be thrilled (Ski the Beav!), Oregon State would like a word...
How about the Elk? Native to the area, impressive looking animal, dangerous when riled up, and I don't think any other D1 program, and certainly no D1 FBS program, has Elk as a mascot.

Re: New Mascot
I as well. Gerry Sherritt should have been run out of town on a rail for that stunt. I think he and some of the other faculty were embarrassed by the "Aggies". A lot of Land Grant universities were Aggies before the 1950s, when, like USAC, they upgraded to universities. Some took the opportunity to change their mascots. I guess some people were/are embarrassed by our/their agricultural/engineering/home ec/ROTC roots. Not me, brother. The Land Grants built this country, producing a cohort of university trained engineers, agronomists, range scientists, and military officers just in time for the agricultural and industrial revolutions, and to win two world wars. Go Aggies!USU78 wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 7:56 amI was there when Aggiedom roared its rage at that affront.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 7:34 amWould not happen. Logan could then compete with Spanish Fork for a Fiesta Days Celebration, honestly that would be cool, I think USU should have a Spanish Heritage game every year and make it Toro themed, get some Mariachi's and dancers in at half time or something.LarryTheAggie wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 5:58 pmI would go with the Utah State Toros. Re: New Mascot
The only benefit I could see with changing to the Scotsmen is that we could potentially set up an annual FB game with Notre Damn and it would be the Irish vs the Scotts. We'll call it the "Fa-Kyu Bowl"LKGates wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 5:59 pmI as well. Gerry Sherritt should have been run out of town on a rail for that stunt. Re: New Mascot
….And I as well. We are the Aggies! We have always been the Aggies. I am proud to be an Aggie. We represent MUCH more than Agriculture, although that is a noble endeavor. We are an academic giant in our conference. We have a big block A on the quad and a huge A on top of the tower of Old Main, and we want to keep it that way. We don’t want to be anything but what we are. I would rue the day if we called ourselves Scotsmen. In this environment we would have to also use Scotswomen. I don’t want to be a trapper either or anything else except just a good old Aggie. ( and my ancestors are mostly Scottish)LKGates wrote: ↑December 28th, 2023, 5:59 pmI as well. I’ve had the same thought about wishing there weren’t so many repeats. You’d have to have some sort of competition between all the schools with the same nickname to determine who has to change.
If we weren’t the Aggies, I’d be ok with the Farmers or Trappers.
