Sagebrush Mentality

Post by Aggie84025 » February 1st, 2024, 10:57 am

I thought this was a pretty cool piece by the volleyball coach. I love the Scotsman in my opinion it is the best cheer/chant in college sports.

Random thought about Sagebrush....anyone notice there is actually sage brush in the Football stadium? Gary A had a secretary find one some to plant it there. She was in my ward and I was in YM's and we went and did it for service. Translated it from up on the hill by the Stan Laub building. I thought there was no way it would take but man last game I was at I realized it really flourished....I'm sure there is an analogy there haha.

I had a friend when I was a kid whose house had a basement with rustic decor - real wood paneling, taxidermied deer/elk/ducks on the walls. Old rifles/tools mounted on the walls, etc. They had their Christmas tree upstairs, but they would bring in a big Sage brush for their downstairs tree where they opened their Christmas presents. If you like the smell of sage brush, that was the place to be.

There is nothing better than the smell of sagebrush after a rain.

I've wondered how a sagebrush plant would fare in my yard for years. I need to just get one planted - but I'm not sure if it's native to Iowa or would cause issues.

I think the excessive summertime rain and humidity would not be conducive to growing Sage brush in Iowa

But, as Coach Neilson said you can grow sagebrush in your soul. Every Aggie is a walking sagebrush, so to speak.

I've heard a similar thing but it was a little birdhouse, not sagebrush

Great Basin Sage, or the big bushes you see around most of Utah, would not do well in Iowa.

There are, however mid-western prairie relatives of the same Artemisia genus that would do quite well in Iowa.

They won't be the same size or shape, but the leaves will look similar and smell the same.

My grandpa is rolling in his grave. Sagebrush was the bane of his life. The family homesteaded a little outside of Heber and when chores were done he'd go fire up the Cat, dragging chains and spiked logs ripping out that nasty stuff. Cleared a lot of land on the hillsides that now have million $ homes sitting there.

I love the song and do it by myself after wins.

Given the choice between clearing sage brush and clearing thistle, I'll take the sagebrush, thank you. I still have thistle stickers running through my body that I was never able to extract
