Post by ViAggie » April 26th, 2024, 4:25 pm

I think it's fair to say that it certainly does for Utah, and Ybu to a lesser extent, but do we get any crumbs? Perhaps a legit NCAA Men's Hockey team or baseball team is out of the deal? How many more Women's sports would we need to add to keep Title 9 compliant? I realize these things cost a lot of money, but having these pro-sports in the State could potentially be huge for USU. :noidea:

It's worked wonders for the University of Denver.

Utah would probably be the first to get hockey. Their club team is already div 1. I think if you are going to add hockey though, just add a men's and women's team. Make it simple.

To your point, it sure can help.
We were in San Fran this week/last for 4 baseball games.
San Jose, Saint Mary's, and SFU. all had fund raisers at the game. One night Jose's band was there for national anthem and the whole game. We could not believe all the young kids that were there hanging out.
Most games didn't go over two and half hours. Webb's game only went 2:15 minutes. So the pitch clock and other time savers are working great for those who think baseball is to long. We like the changes too.
Go Giants and the Mets!!

The answer is yes. The media world can't ignore Utah anymore because the bottom of Utah County to the top Cache County is now in the millions of people (the area is not that big to have that many people.
Utah State and Utah would be the biggest winners in this because both schools can promote themselves to two countries. (US and Canada)

Counterpoint. Stanford, Cal, and San Jose attendance numbers are likely in part due to having more options for people’s entertainment dollars. Think of it this way. Some GS Warriors games or 49ers games, or season tickets to San Jose or Stanford.

If we are adding women's sports, I think if makes most sense to add women's gold and women's lacrosse. Both would be fairly inexpensive adds.

Lacrosse would be cool and would pay himage to the native American heritage.

Golf would be cheap and I heard that it's the sport with the most unused scholarships, so you almost don't have to be good to get a scholarship. You could almost just use it as a fundraising gimmick go out and offer scholarship to the kids from wealthy families and doners, and it might pay for itself. :joking:

I would also love to see equestrian added since we are an Ag school, but that is probably a harder sell.

When I was playing hockey, Davenport was one of the top teams. Their top players were all on scholarship on the golf team. That was their hockey recruiting technique.

Oh 100% Zach Edey is an Aggie if Utah had a hockey team while he lived in Canada. The USU promotion would be too hard to ignore!

Arch Manning had us in his top three until he found out the grizzlies weren’t NHL. This has been confirmed by aggies21 who has more knowledge than 22.

Why stop there? We can also promote ourselves to Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Iceland (I am assuming based solely on Mighty Ducks movies). The connection between an NHL team in Salt Lake City and a land grant state school 80 miles away is too strong to ignore.
