With the recruiting class we have coming in and the guys we have on roster now and Gary as our HC, we should have a great year next year and beyond.

People close to the situation are pretty tight lipped, they won’t confirm nor deny the GA rumors.

I think we could have waited 10+ days to hire until we started realizing how wide spread the fallout of coaching staff is. The program seems to be barely holding on and we need someone ASAP.

My source has heard conflicting info. First it was Gary, then Gary was of the list and a national search was started. Now Gary is back on the list but search goes on. Source says expect to hear something later this week.

Agreed. Smith was a great hire and he hired well at Troy.ChicAggie wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 11:08 amI’m glad we all know more than Hartwell and his advisors about what needs to be done here. He did a great job getting Smith (who was never on this board’s radar), and I am confident he’ll do a great job replacing Wells & Co. as well.

Re: Here comes Gary
I don’t agree. 10 to 14 days it’s reasonable and necessary to make the right higher. Let Wells take whoever he wants. If someone wants to follow Wells, they will. The new coach will have his own guys that he wants to bring in, and he may keep one or two of the current coaching staff. But that’s for him to decide. Just like Smith brought in his own guys. He didn’t keep any of Duryea’s guys and it’s worked out great.
The recruits that want to play at Utah State will embrace the new staff. The recruits that want to go with Wells will find a reason to do that. Relax! The process is necessary to get the right guy.

This keeps getting repeated over and over and over. Why can’t we have both? The right coach and have it happen first of the week?TrueAG wrote:I'd rather have the right Coach than hurry to save a couple recruits. The Coach is more important than any player in College Football.

Re: Here comes Gary
I don't know and either do you. Maybe GA needs a deeper background check. Maybe GA is being difficult or wishy washy (it's happened before). The hate on Hartwell for people knowing nothing about what's going on is stupid.2004AG wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 12:22 pmThis keeps getting repeated over and over and over. Why can’t we have both? Re: Here comes Gary
Because who is the right coach needs adequate due diligence. It took time to determine Smith was the right coach. Relax there’s not a single player I’m worried about losing at this point; he can be replaced. But get the wrong coach, and we have is a 3 to 4 year disaster.2004AG wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 12:22 pmThis keeps getting repeated over and over and over. Why can’t we have both? I hate to agree with USUBlue, yet here we are. If it's Gary, great. If not, trust the process. No rushing, less room for regret.USUBlue wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 12:28 pmBecause who is the right coach needs adequate due diligence. It took time to determine Smith was the right coach. Re: Here comes Gary
I’m not advocating for the wrong coach. I want the right coach as bad as anyone but it’s possible to have both. Hartwell should have been working on this for a couple weeks now. He shouldn’t be in New York.

Do you know he hasn't been? Let it play out and then you'll have plenty of time to complain if he messes it up. He may have had a quick plan and something unforeseen come up.

Re: Here comes Gary
How do you know it is possible to have both already? He should be in New York, you do not know what is going on in New York as far as what he is doing in regard to checking out background on possible hires.
I think a lot of people on this think G.A. is the only decent choice, so any delay is wrong, that is short sighted at best

But what are your thoughts on our budget, attendance and season tickets? And maybe just Aggie fans in general?

Hartwell is in New York and GA is in Utah, so there is your national search. #Make it happen

Well in the article it says the search firm will change directions if word is leaked, so...

I think search firms are stupid. Isn't that what we pay John Hartwell to do?

Re: Here comes Gary
I have my concerns about them as well, but there are several benefits and given the players may actually be essential:
1. Confidentiality. Most have jobs already and don't want their employer to know until at least an initial match has been made.
2. Head Hunter. Kind of a clearinghouse for coaches and schools that can be regularly updated without contacting hundreds of different ADs and coaches.
3. Initial Negotiations. How much a school may pay and how much a coach is looking for, including other benefits, can be discussed casually without getting together.
4. Deniability. May be the most important. Both sides can say that they never spoke or met.

That's what I thought they did. So does Hartwell really get credit for the Craig Smith hire or this Sugiyama guy?

As I've mentioned, the only people who really know what is going on is Hartwell, the candidate, and the search company. Even the Pres. will be a step removed until final interviews and confirmation. Oh and AK also knows, but he knows how to keep a secret.Aggieforlife wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 11:33 amPeople close to the situation are pretty tight lipped, they won’t confirm nor deny the GA rumors.

Re: Here comes Gary
My goodness Blue you have been on track thru this whole process, if you want to do do this right you need a search firm to check out the over 100 people that will apply, also with getting set up for a bowl game in 14 days will fill a A.D's agenda.USUBlue wrote: ↑December 2nd, 2018, 3:28 pmAs I've mentioned, the only people who really know what is going on is Hartwell, the candidate, and the search company. If you want to do it fast, but need to be thorough a search company is needed.
