Mark Harlan is a pussy....
Just read on Mountain West wire where the Ute AD says its not in their interest to play us---in Bball or Fball. Translation: "I'm scared Utah State would kick our asses." %^$#$@ pussy.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
A Utah loss to us could hurt them when it comes to in-state recruiting. They want kids to cling to the belief that they are the best team in the state.

I have come to the conclusion that our only chance to play them is in bowl games. Basketball is more telling on how they don't want to lose to us.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
Not only that but in the eyes of the CFP committee losing to us is still a black mark. I hope that will change, but it will take time.
Meanwhile what do they gain by beating us? One win closer to bowl eligibility and maybe reinforcing their in-state recruiting advantage.
I have to agree with Bigblue. It will take a bowl game for us to play the Utes on the gridiron- and I don't think that's likely.
I think college football needs a 3-tiered promotion and relagation system.
I know it's a pipedream though as it would require P5 conferences to gives up much of their power.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
I think it has to do with perception in the state. They are playing fellow g5 schools just not the one in their backyard (BYU is in there backyard). When Gary has us on the upswing and we had beat Utah you saw what it did for instate recruiting.USUMAE wrote: βJune 5th, 2019, 7:40 amNot only that but in the eyes of the CFP committee losing to us is still a black mark. In the eyes of the CFP committee a loss to anyone would be a black mark for Utah. A loss to Alabama would keep them out of the playoffs and if they don't win their conference them they won't go to an NY6 bowl.USUMAE wrote:Not only that but in the eyes of the CFP committee losing to us is still a black mark. They would not be playing BYU if not being forced to by state government, which is yet another thing that is very telling about Utah.
There were some that thought that Hartwell was not making a effort to schedule them this should remove any doubt.

Plus the last seven times they played basketball in Logan they lost.

I understand why they don't play us in the major sports. They don't want to be thought of as inferior in their own state. They want to keep the power that they have enjoyed over us for over 100 years. They have done it academically as well.

I completely understand why they don't play us in football and to a lesser extent basketball. What I don't understand is why they go to Northern Illinois or Fresno State. Is that a knock on them or credit to us that they see NIU and Fresno as more of a guaranteed win/less bad of loss than playing USU?

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
If that is the case why do we play Weber, UVU in Basketball ? Do we not have as much to lose as what the ewe of ewe does ?
you play the game, if you are afraid of losing to another instate school then perhaps you should face the folks that fund your University, and explain why you are not willing to play instate school instead of taking games and revenue out of state ? If I was in state government that question would be asked loud and often.
When USU starts to get quality teams the ewe of ewe blackball our membership in conference with them or refuse to play us.

Said it before, but no it doesn't for basketball. Utah State (in the Big West at the time) beat Utah in Logan 71-45 in basketball. Utah still got a 5 seed in the NCAA tournament that year. A loss to USU doesn't hurt Utah like everyone keeps communicating.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
For football it makes a bit more sense even given their scheduling of teams like NIU and Wyoming. The perception is that rivalry games are harder hitting, more emotional affairs that take a greater toll on a team. To play both BYU and USU every year is thought to be placing too big a burden on them. I don't disagree. IF we didn't have the theocracy we do in Utah, I'd bet Utah would be open to rotating USU and BYU every other year. I'd be all for that.oleblu111 wrote: βJune 5th, 2019, 8:44 amWhen they schedule Wyoming to a home and home series in football no explanation needed.Madmartigan wrote: βJune 5th, 2019, 8:40 amI understand why they don't schedule us in football (sort of), but there is zero excuse in Basketball.

Basketball though, I don't understand that one at all. Still bad blood from the Collette thing and TD insinuating there was tampering? I have no idea.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
If we keep winning, and calmly but persistently stating that we are happy to play them home and home, eventually the fans, the media, and perhaps the state legislature will bring enough pressure to force the issue, especially if BYU continues to decline.
Two years from now, if the U has beaten the Y 10 times in a row, and we've beaten them soundly 4 times in a row, there will be pressure to switch out USU for BYU on the U's schedule.

I get Utah being hesitant to schedule us for Football. Playing two in state rivalries for your out of conference schedule would be hard. Especially if they another P5 team as their 3rd OCG. They'd be worn out and beaten up by the time their conference schedule started.
However, instead of being honest and saying that, they make up lame excuses. That's my problem with the situation.
There is NO EXCUSE however for basketball. Just plain cowards.

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
The UofU and BYU have a lot more alumni right now than USU. But given that the enrollments at all three schools are getting to be within a few thousand of each other that condition will slowly change. That might bring a bit more pressure to bear - but it will be a long time coming.
I think as long as the UofU is in a top tier conference and we are not the chances of playing them in football or basketball are basically nil.
On the flip side as long as BYU is independent they are likely going to be begging us to play. So we can enjoy that.

Because people in the state forget about losses to those teams quicker than they forget about losses to USU. They are trying to show that they are the top team in the state. By not playing all of the other teams in the state they can continue to perpetuate this myth.dhilk3785 wrote: βJune 5th, 2019, 9:23 amI completely understand why they don't play us in football and to a lesser extent basketball. I get the logic not wanting to do a home/home every year with USU in addition to BYU. That being said if you are going to do series with NIU, SJSU, FSU, and WYO you have room to put the Aggies in one of those spots every 5 or so years. Basketball there is no logic behind i

Re: Mark Harlan is a pussy....
I'm not sure it is in our best interest to play them. Playing 2 in state non conference games a year, 1 FCS school and a money game is a very limited schedule. It might behove us to play a team out side of our conference footprint seeing how we get players from Texas and Florida alot.
A win would feel good but would it really mean more than a win over Michigan State or Washington State for that matter? Yes slightly because of instate kids. But what would a loss do.. reinforce that mind set in kids.
Yes in my heart I want to play and beat Utah but no more than any other P5 school. If we scheduled a 4 year home and home with Colorado would it really be much different than Utah in the long run? I doubt it.

We were lucky to get a home & home with Washington State and only got a 2 for 1 with Wake Forest. I think it would be difficult to get a 4-year deal with anyone in the P5, though Iβd love to see it happen.MWCFAN12 wrote: βJune 5th, 2019, 4:48 pmI'm not sure it is in our best interest to play them. Considering that our last meaningful win against a P5 was against the Utes (not counting the home win vs a down WF) I would rather have them on the schedule (even in SLC) than play 2 out of state P5s in a year like this year.
Either way- I hate Utah for traveling to San Jose, Laramie, and Illinois to play G5βs instead of sacking up and playing us. Guarantee their fans would rather watch them play the Aggies than the WYO pokes.
Harlan will follow Hillβs legacy and itβs a shame. The positive that I take away is that they clearly feel more confident they can beat the Y than beating USU.
