How Big Is This Game Really?
Honest question. The zoobs on Cougarboard keep saying that this is our "Super Bowl." I don't know about any of you, but I didn't have byu as one of my games I circled at the beginning of the year.
Honestly I wouldn't put it in our top 5 important games this year.
The two thing we needed to do coming into this season to take our program to the next step were:
1. Win the MWC
2. Beat a P5 team on the road.
Beating byu again wouldn't accomplish any of these. We've beaten byu soundly these past two years. While beating them again will be nice, but not season changing. The best things that can come out of winning this game are bragging rights, taking a step up with In-State recruiting, and getting our offense going before important conference games.
What do you guys think?

The four games to end the year are more important.

You are correct, though I would also rate it medium high for in state perception.

Re: How Big Is This Game Really?
For me I care about the conference games. That being said I want to see the game become bowl eligible and a win here would pretty much guarantee this. So in those terms it is big for me, but that is all. I would have taken a win at AF any day of the week over a win over BYU if I had the choice. This year I am going to say that this game is a lot bigger for them in terms of fan bases as we have beat them the last 2 years.

While DEEP DOWN I know that a conference championship is the ultimate goal each and every season and that makes our conference games more important than a non-conference game. I theoretically KNOW that the byu game is really no different impact wise on our goals than the LSU, Stony Brook or Wake Forest games. That being said I CAN"T STAND losing to those *&^%$#$%^&^%$#!!! I'm sure it has to do with being from within the same state and being around that school's crazy a$$ fans. JUST WIN THIS DAMN GAME!!

Re: How Big Is This Game Really?
I agree with this, but not knowing (we can all guess) how the rest of the season will go, this game in my mind is a big deal. Having already lost to Air Force, a lot has to go right to win a MWC championship, and I think we can all agree with how our offense is playing, things aren't looking good in that department right now. If we aren't going to win a MWC championship, and being an instate team, beating BYU is a higher priority than other non-conference games (beating a P5 team would rank higher on my list). I think this is where oleblu misinterprets how many on this board feel. If you could pick at the beginning of the year, either winning a MWC championship and lose to BYU, or beat BYU and not win a MWC championship, and those were your only two options, I think almost everyone on this board would pick to win a MWC championship. I know it doesn't need to be either or. However, if we aren't going to win a MWC championship (which isn't looking great at this point), a win against BYU is pretty sweet, and the hatred that most have towards them, makes this game very important.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 10:55 amFor me I care about the conference games. This is the least important of our remaining games. Having said that, should we lose any of our remaining 4 conference games and not have a shot at the division championship, then this game takes on more meaning to not lose to an in state team.

Look, I think we all want to beat those pricks. It would also cement us as the #2 team in the state. I just think that winning the MWC is much bigger than beating byu. Nor do I think anyone sees this as our "Superbowl."mcaggie1 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 12:31 pmI am with you, and I really think that most of our fans feel the same way, although many on this board don't to seem to want to admit it.aggies22 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 11:01 amWhile DEEP DOWN I know that a conference championship is the ultimate goal each and every season and that makes our conference games more important than a non-conference game. Re: How Big Is This Game Really?
This game is really BIG.
If we lose to BYU:
- we are the 3rd best team in the state.
- recruiting will suffer.
- Sitake > Anderson
- our record goes from a winning record to 4-4.
- Gary Anderson's record against BYU goes to 1-4.
- it's going to be more difficult to get to a bowl game. We will have to win 3 out of our last 4 games. Who will we beat? New Mexico and what two other teams (BSU, Fresno, Wyoming).
- what are the chances we beat BSU, Fresno State, and Wyoming? Let's face it, if we're not good enough to beat BYU (3-4) at home what are the chances we go to the MWC Championship game.
- we lose our pride.
- we lose our confidence.
- we're humiliated.
- we have to listen to BYU fans talk about how they are better than us.
- what are the chances that we beat them next year in Provo
- ticket sales will decline
- my family will be and my wife will be saying , why did we make the trip from Boise to go to this game?
This game is our super bowl this week! We need this WIN!
Question: If we win all the rest of our MWC games are we guaranteed to go to the MWC Championship game? For example, if AFs only loss is to BSU and BSUs only loss is to us. If AF goes 10-2 and Boise goes 10-2, does winning the game against BYU improve our overall ranking or does that even matter? For example, in this scenario if we lose to BYU we will be 8-4 but if we win we will be 9-3.

We only need 2 more wins to go to a bowl game.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:08 pm- it's going to be more difficult to get to a bowl game. We will have to win 3 out of our last 4 games. Who will we beat? New Mexico and what two other teams (BSU, Fresno, Wyoming).
If we win out then we have a chance at going to the MWC Championship game but it isn't guaranteed. It's hard to say right now how the tie breakers will work out but I imagine in a 3 way tie the computer rankings will favor Boise.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:08 pmQuestion: If we win all the rest of our MWC games are we guaranteed to go to the MWC Championship game? [The funny thing about this game is this is the first time in who knows how long that I truly feel this game is bigger to their fan base than ours. I can't speak for everyone, but for me I for sure want to beat them, but I want to win the conference first. If he wants to throw in these stupid d-bag comments all it is going to do is fuel the fire. And then they realize why literally everyone despises that program.]

The only way to guarantee a bowl game in the MWC is to win the conference. That being said, I don't remember a bowl eligible MWC team being left home.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:16 pmI thought that we needed 3 more wins to ENSURE a bowl game but 2 more for bowl eligibility?ProvoAggie wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:10 pmWe only need 2 more wins to go to a bowl game.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:08 pm- it's going to be more difficult to get to a bowl game. Yes, it's a big deal. They are an in-state rival who we compete with for marketability and recruits. It's ridiculous for some to say the game doesn't matter anymore because we've won the last two; that carries far less validity than when BYU was going something like 20-3 against us and saying they wanted to end the series.

I completely agree with this take. I took my then 12-year-old down to Provo last year, and that was the night he became hooked on Aggie football. Re: How Big Is This Game Really?
AF only has NM, CSU, and Wyoming left on their schedule. We better be cheering VERY hard for an upset! I could see a slip up at CSU possibly if Marvin McKinsey is healthy and their WR play a good game like this week when they beat Fresno. We were not able to establish a passing game, but hopefully CSU does. Wyoming has a pretty good D, but so did we, so not sure if Wyoming can win this one. Also, it is at Air Force. So I think the best chance for an AF loss would be CSU on Nov 16th, but even then, it is unlikely.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:42 pmI hope you're right but I'm not confident that will happen. You could also flip it on them pretty easily and say that it is their Super Bowl. I'm guessing that if you look at USU's team goals for this year you won't see beat BYU at the top. If you look at BYU's team goals hanging on the wall in their locker room, beat Utah, Boise and USU is listed right near the top. This is BYU's last game of the year that is listed in their goals. That is a Super Bowl.

Re: How Big Is This Game Really?
IMO, with the exception of LSU, no SINGLE game is the BIGGEST game of the year for us. At the beginning of the MWC season San Diego State was the BIGGEST game of the year for us. Last week Air Force was the BIGGEST game of the year for us. Now, even if we win ALL the rest of our conference games we are not GUARANTEED to go to the MWC Championship game. IF we're not going to make it to the MWC Championship game then this game against BYU MIGHT be the BIGGEST game we have remaining due to the instate implications.AggieUprising50 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 3:09 pmLet me clarify, I'm not saying it doesn't matter, I'm saying that it's by no means the biggest game of the year for us.FloridaAggie13 wrote: ↑October 28th, 2019, 2:38 pmYes, it's a big deal. They are an in-state rival who we compete with for marketability and recruits. It's ridiculous for some to say the game doesn't matter anymore because we've won the last two; that carries far less validity than when BYU was going something like 20-3 against us and saying they wanted to end the series.
The game matters big time.
Byu fans like to patronize us by saying it's our "Super Bowl" to make themselves feel relevant.
Is it a big game that we want to win? Of course. Is it the biggest game of the year? Not even close.
