Men's X-Country
I just saw that the Aggie men's X-Country team was ranked 19th nationally in the pre-season polls. This is the first time in school history they are ranked in a pre-season poll. That's a good start for them, Hopefully they perform to expectations this year and finish ranked. Best of luck to the team.

This is exciting news! I hope they can improve and move up the rankings. It is awesome to have preseason accolades.

Re: Men's X-Country
The rise of the program also coincides with finally recruiting more Utah kids. Utah is one of the best states in the country for XC and it always mystified me why the previous staff made it so hard for Utah kids to get there.
Hail the Utah Aggies!

Re: Men's X-Country
As with other coaching staffs of other sports in the past, I think there is a common misperception that there are better athletes outside the state of utah.

The men and women won today at an invitational hosted by Montana State. They are currently ranked #17.

Re: Men's X-Country
We'll know more about how good the team is after Paul Short on the 1st and Nuttycombe on the 15th. Both teams will have to earn plenty of KOLA points at those meets to give a shot at an at large berth since qualifying with one of the two automatic spots out of the mountain region is difficult at best. I'm confident the men will and hopeful that the women can. Either way, Artie and Sarah have done a tremendous job with the program.
Hail the Utah Aggies!
Re: Men's X-Country
Last year the men finished I believe 14th in the nation, and the year before that they won the conference title (the MW has some very good XC teams for those who aren’t familiar). I know cross country is far from a “revenue sport”, but it’s pretty cool to see a Utah State team having that kind of success on the national stage.

The MW is a difficult cross country conference. Air Force is the perennial champion.

Thanks for the correction. Looking at who ran today, most of our best runners were not competing today which makes sense with Paul Short next weekend. It is a very good sign that we are winning meets while holding out our best athletes.

Re: Men's X-Country
I have a cousin on the track team. Well, actually my cousin's kid but I will just say cousin for short instead of worrying about what the technical term is.
Anyhow, I told both my mom and my aunt and uncle(his grandparents) how one of their meets would be in Pennsylvania which is just an hour away from another one of my uncles. Both my parents and my aunt and uncle both told me that they thought he wouldn't travel cause of being a freshman. I explained to them that it's not as simple as you don't travel JUST cause you are a freshman but do if you are a sophomore or junior, as it's instead a matter of being the best on the team and not your age.
Today, my mom was telling me that my cousin sat out the Idaho State meet, which his dad was slightly unhappy about as that's the easiest place for him to make it to, being close to Rexburg where he lives, but being happy for him getting to travel to the more prestigious meet. So I am hoping that at least his great uncle(my uncle) makes it there to cheer for him being just an hour away.

Paul Short results as we got them:
Looks like we took 9 runners on both the men's side and women's.
Our 8th and 9th runners competed in the open race.
Max Wehrli got 4th, Will Dixon got 19th, Camilla McKinsley got 3rd and Megan Terry got 4th.
The men's team is racing right now, followed by the women.

Re: Men's X-Country
The men's team placed fourth.
Caleb Garcia placed first, Camren Todd placed 4th, Conner Weaver placed 15th, Roberto Porras placed 23rd, Mark Crandall placed 43rd, Bridger Atlice placed 49th and Walker Cole placed 51st.
I'd call this a success for our team. I'm not thrilled that we lost to three teams ranked below us but this was our first real test and they performed well. There was a tight spread and we had the top runner!

Women's results are in! The women placed 3rd behind Villanova and NAU.
Katie Struthers got fourth, Bailey Brinkerhoff got 14th, Micaela Rivers got 17th, Emma Thornley placed 28th, Morgan French placed 30th, Jensen Abby placed 45th, Madison Taylor placed 61st.
The women's team did really well. All in all I would call this a successful day for our cross country team!
Also, I typed the results fairly quickly, so I probably have a few errors in the names and places.

It is funny that my dad offer his services to be an assistant coach when he met the Aggies Cross-Country head coach since my dad was a long-distance runner that ran for Oregon State back in the days when they were one of the top cross country teams in the nation(his times would impress all of you) and a head coach at the high school but never heard back from Aggies head coach.

Re: Men's X-Country
I saw some projections for nationals and our men's team is projected to be the last one to get an at-large bid. Boise State and AFA are projected to be on the outside looking in. This is from the Letsrun forums, so who knows how good this projection is.
My takeaways:
1. We are in probably the toughest region in terms of competition.
2. Placing 4th at Paul Short Invite really hurt our chances at an at large bid. The teams that beat us shot up in the coaches rankings.
3. We need to get 1st or 2nd at conference to build a good at-large resume. If we get 3rd or worse I don't think we get in.
3.We can't lay an egg at the regional meet. We need to be in the top 5. Some teams seem to be able to get away with that but we're not one of them.
4. It's not inconceivable that we get 2 mountain west teams in.
I don't think the women's team is in contention for an at-large bid at this point and they'll need to go through some good teams to get one of the two auto-bids.

Re: Men's X-Country
Placing high at regionals is important, but not because of what you think. It's not a "they ran well at a tough region site, let's let them in" like the men's basketball tournament. In XC, the teams that finish top two in their region get automatic bids. Then, the team that has the most wins over that field gets let in next, and so on and so forth. There's a weird rule where if a team finishes fifth in the region, and they are next in line to be picked, but only the top three teams of the region have been included, then the team that finished fourth gets automatically pushed in to nationals. So there are a few wrinkles, but it's mostly about who you beat and how many "win points" for lack of a better term, that you get. It's a system that takes all the human-ness out of picking.USUMAE wrote: ↑October 6th, 2021, 5:43 pmI saw some projections for nationals and our men's team is projected to be the last one to get an at-large bid.

Nuttycombe at Wisconsin next Friday will be a huge opportunity. A good performance there will make up for the missed opportunity at Paul Short. Nuttycombe is usually one of the biggest meets of the year.
Hail the Utah Aggies!

Re: Men's X-Country
Today is the mountain west conference meet.
Surprising results for the Aggies. Caleb Garcia dropped 12 places over the last 800.
Hayden Cooper dropped from first at the 2.4k mark to 41st. Did he get a mild injury or just go out too fast? I'd expect a senior to not go out too fast, but that stuff happens.
Huge shout-out to Chase Leach our top men's finisher of the day. That freshman has really been improving.
Men end up third behind BSU and AF.

Re: Men's X-Country
The women are starting to finish.
New Mexico went 1-7 for a perfect 15.
That's some straight up dominance right there.
The women finished second with Katie Struthers placing tenth.
I'm pleasantly surprised at the women's team. I knew they weren't going to beat new mexico, but i didn't expect second.
I think the men sightly underperformed. I knew it would be a tall order to win, and I think they could've, but they didn't. Still, we lost to teams that are ranked fairly high so it shouldn't hurt us too much.

Re: Men's X-Country
Garnica was leading the pack and then the pack left him, so it wasn't like he was alone out front and died. He did fade. More concerning was Cameron Todd who was 9th overall at Nuttycombe, I think he was 9th on the team today. The men have underperformed so far this season, injuries and illness will do that to you. That said, the men are still ranked 21st in the country and have an opportunity to make nationals with a good performance at regionals on the 12th. Beating CSU who was ranked ahead of them helps.
That was a great performance by our women to beat 12th ranked CSU. Nobody was touching New Mexico, there is a reason they are ranked 3rd in the country.
The mountain region is brutal which is why you can almost always expect 4 or 5 at large berths out of the mountain.

I was not aware their were so many top teams in the mountain west. What drives that?Stucki wrote: ↑October 29th, 2021, 7:28 pmGarnica was leading the pack and then the pack left him, so it wasn't like he was alone out front and died. He did fade. Re: Men's X-Country
The Intermountain West has a lot of good high school cross-country. Utah and Colorado are two of the best states to find talent for these programs, and the surrounding states have good runners as well, and some of these programs attract talent from all over the country because they are good training areas at higher elevation with good consistent coaching.
If you look at our roster, most of the men and women are from Utah or Idaho with a few national recruits sprinkled in. The other Utah schools are similar in their roster construction.
As far as why the mountain region gets so many at-large berths, look at what schools are in it: NAU, Colorado, BYU, Southern Utah, Weber, Montana State, Utah's women's team plus all the Mountain West schools that matter besides Boise State which is in the West regional.
The strength of Utah high school XC is why so many of us that coach in Utah were so frustrated with Gensell, because he made it so hard for Utah kids to run for him while he was the coach here. One of my best runners, Jason Lynch, wanted to come here but couldn't get a phone call or email returned so he ran at Utah Valley and had a great career. Jerrell Mock ran at Logan High and won a conference title for Colorado State. Conner Mantz from Sky View, who is defending national champion for BYU never got a phone call from Greg, according to his mother. Taylor Thornley from Logan High wanted to be an Aggie and she ended up being an all-conference runner for Weber.
I'm sure Artie is a good coach, most college coaches are, but his biggest strength from our perspective is that the basis of recruiting is now the 2 - 3 hour radius around Logan.
Sorry, I could go on about this forever.
