Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Honest question, what about Hill gives you confidence he will be successful as a head coach? He has been a career assistant. Obviously you never know until he is a head coach but i would like to see Hill be a head coach before giving him the reins. Did Hill every put in for the MSU job last season after Sprinkle left that seems like it would have been a good starting point for him.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
I think the only risk is can he win some conference tournaments and maybe can he recruit to the west. He has proven he can win regular season tournaments. He has coached 22 years and won 409 games for an average of 18.5 wins per season with 10 of those seasons above 20 wins. It seems like his floor is going to be in the 20 win mark. By the way i am not sold on this guy and would prefer Simon or the EWU guy over his but would take him over hiring Hill as i have no idea what the floor is for Hill.Aggie in Boise wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 1:59 pmMaybe? How would we know? If he told us that, should we trust him? IMO, It's too risky.ineptimusprime wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 1:47 pmCounterpoint -- maybe he wants to go somewhere with the resources to win to actually accomplish something of real note in his career and will be highly motivated upon arrival.Tetonkatest wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 1:30 pmHard pass on Kowalczyk. He's looking to coast into retirement. Hasn't done much in his career.

Why is everyone so mad about Todd? Because he has won... a lot. But, but ... he didn't win in a crapshoot of a tournament.

You answered your own question.
And, he doesn’t have any connections to Utah and would be more likely to leave than Simon would.
Hope that helps.

Re: Kowalczyk - Toledo
Honestly, I would be very happy with either Kowalczyk or Simon. Our track record with hiring coaches who were consistent winners in lower-tier conferences is very good. And I think it would be silly to disqualify Kowalczyk simply because he has not managed to win multiple games against the top teams in his conference on a neutral floor. How many times did Stew lose in the BWCT?
That said, if Simon wants the job, I hope Sabau at least interviewed him. A quick Google search says that Simon used be an assistant at Findlay Prep and was also an assistant under Dave Rice at UNLV, when they were consistently signing top 10 recruiting classes. Those are recruiting connections that USU has not had, well, ever. I don't know if he managed to ever sign any blue chip players at SUU or Bowling Green. But I like the idea of a coach with strong ties to Findlay Prep coaching in what will soon be the top conference in the West.

Kowalczyk has some really interesting players that could follow him here:

Simon just doesn’t. With our current shelf life of coaches, can you blame me for being more worried about the players they could bring?

Todd has a son named Race (class of 2026) that is considered one of the top recruits in Ohio. He averaged 15 ppg as a sophomore this year.

His son is 6'6 and currently has four D1 offers. He might be looking for a good gig for both he and his son. If so, he is likely going to work his (I can't express myself without swearing) off for at least the next 6 to 7 years.

I'm surprised that Dave Rice hasn't landed another job simply due to his recruiting connections. He signed top 10 classes consistently during his time at UNLV. But he couldn't win despite all the NBA talent on his roster. I don't want Rice as a head coach, but if he still has his recruiting contacts, he would not be a horrible assistant.Tetonkatest wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 9:13 pmWell, he finished 3rd in the Conference 3 times, and had 2 NCAA tourney appearances in 4 years.Aggie702 wrote: ↑March 25th, 2024, 8:55 pmHe's a great guy but got plenty of leeway at unlv. Would be pretty bummed if it was a full on rebuild and we have a “zero returning points” scenario again. Just get Isaac and one or two other rotation guys to stay and we’d be in business with Kowalczyk.
