Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
I don't give a sh*t if our coaches stay, as long as we continue to win, and win when it matters. I'd rather have 20 coaches in 20 years with winning and success than one coach for 20 years with mediocrity.Aggiesbleedblue wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:58 pmI thought we wanted someone who would be likely to stay? It’s not just the Utah ties it’s the west coast ties that I liked about Simon. Plus he lived in Utah for 7 years and probably wouldn’t want to bounce after 1-2 years . But hey go Aggies right I will support no matter what.

Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
Just some context. Stew prior to coming here had a record of 218-138 for win % of 61%. Tod has 409 wins as a head coach and a 58% winning record. We have never hired a coach that has as much prior success as Tod. I wanted Simon and thought he was the best candidate but its not like the Aggies are hiring some chump off the street that is not qualified to coach a college team.

So we hired the first guy we talked to. The name that was leaked 4 days ago and now this old fart will be a week behind in working the portal. Expect a mass exodus from the team from what I’m told.

We talked to him last year. Apparently he was high on the list last year and then withdrew his name from consideration at the last minute.hipsterdoofus21 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 1:09 pmSo we hired the first guy we talked to. Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
I’ll be honest this is the least excited I have been about a hire. I’m usually a homer guys, I’ve never felt so negative about the direction of USU Athletics as I do now, well since the Arslainian power punt. Someone help, what am I not seeing here? Sadly we didn’t choose to invest in our future we didn’t choose to be winners we chose mediocrity. And the excuses, well we don’t have the money to be successful right. We’ll have fun doing this without my money. I think bottoming out as fast as possible is our best bet at this point. Darkness closing in here. To those who disagree please help me see what you see.

I felt hopefully with the Simon hire, seems like someone who is still trying to make a name for himself and what’s to push a program past where it’s ever been to put his name in the history books.Blue Sage wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 1:19 pmI’ll be honest this is the least excited I have been about a hire. But Tod k? Very discouraging and I am not hopeful for nah success in March while he is here.
I was hopeful with Smith, Odom, Sprinkle, then Simon, but I just don’t see light at the end of the tunnel with Tod K.

He has much more of a current pool of players to pull from to build his USU roster than Simon does. I am excited for this hire. Hopefully he's already on the phone trying to keep some guys in Logan.

Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
There are some odd things about the hire. 22 years and 400 wins in Toledo and he never receives and/or accepts a bigger offer until now in an area 1500 miles from where he's lived in a place and culture he knows nothing about.
That said if the NIL collective donors fork over the cash to buy high level MW players and his regular season success continues he'll get us to the dance in a 3-6 bid MWC and then its just a matter of the matchup and whether the team can get hot/lucky. He has 22 years to get another one anyway before we can complain too much.

This hire is a head scratcher, unless they offered Simon but he took another opportunity and we had to fall back on Tod K as our second choice.
I'm a reasonable man, get off my case.

We did only beat Akron by 1 on a neutral floor last season, the competition in the MAC is solid
Get Maddox, Cochran, Simmons and maybe Wilson to come and add some MW level guys from elsewhere and we could be cooking
Toledo has 2 good recruits too but they’re from Michigan so maybe were looking to stay local

Keep 2 of the following: Johnson, Falslev, Osobor, Uduje and Martinez
That's a good start IMO.

Agreed.StanfordAggie wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:46 pmI'm confused why people were excited about Simon, who also has zero tournament appearances, and less wins over a shorter career than Kowalcyzk. I, for one, think that this is a fantastic hire.

Maybe Falslev but doubtful, the other 3 are gone
We can keep Templin, Grant but we need a transfer big and a wing with some size

Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
So, Diana opted to deviate from the successful pattern we've seen with our last three coaches and pursue a more conservative "safe hire" approach?
There are certainly some advantages to bringing TK on board. Hopefully TK's contract spans no more than two years and heavily includes performance-based incentives. Considering TK's probable intent to make this his final coaching position, what kind of buyout should we expect?

Re: Tod Kowalczyk - Announcement on Tuesday
Yeah, it looks like he dominated his conference for four years in a row. But since it's a small conference, he won't get into the NCAA tournament unless he wins his conference tournament. I think the MWC is strong enough now that whoever wins the regular-season title will likely get an NCAA bid.Aggie84025 wrote: ↑March 28th, 2024, 12:45 pmTod is a great coach in the regular season as shown from his regular season titles but not fared well in conference tournaments or NIT. Hopefully at USU he can get over that hump. For sure a different hire than our last 3 as he is on the downward side in terms of how many years he probably has left in coaching. Excited to see how it turns out.
