Have we ever figured out the whole “Are foreign players eligible for NIL” issue? If they have a school visa they can’t make money and NIL under current laws counts. Does Great have a work visa?ryguy417 wrote:Or worse, Coach met and we don’t have the bag to even consider staying. Hopefully not, but a big man like Osobor will demand $300-500k likely.

Re: Great Osobor
Guys I read about Hunter Dickinson getting $1.2M at Kansas, current transfer AJ Storr demanding $1M in NIL, Kansas only offering $750k so he turns it down, and other numbers I realize Great is going to be offers probably close to $500k. I have to think he's 100% gone.

While I also agree with this, it’s not like we weren’t massive beneficiaries of the portal with this exact player just 12 months ago. I don’t blame Ashworth or Osobor for even 1 second if they are getting 6 figure offers to play basketball as 21 year olds still in college.slcagg wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:39 pmAgreed.Aggie4L1fe wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:38 pmTransfer portal is ruining college sports

Re: Great Osobor
It's not the transfer portal. Before the creation of the transfer portal, it was VERY difficult for a player to transfer. There was not rhyme or reason to it. The player had to do all the calling around just to try and find a coach and a program that had room for him. The INITIAL reason for creation was very pure, it was to allow coaches the ability to see who was available. It took out all the guesswork and streamlined what used to be a very difficult process.Aggie4L1fe wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:38 pmTransfer portal is ruining college sports

I think their ways around it. Zach Edey is from Canada and people made it sound like their collective was transferring money into someone's account to work around the issue.scotlandog wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:39 pmHave we ever figured out the whole “Are foreign players eligible for NIL” issue? And it's a terrible way to run a business. If you hop jobs every year or the employer has to replace all the employees every year it will eventually go out of business. Right now it's tied to people's irrational love of their University, when in reality it's just unregulated minor leagues with diminishing returns.JonnyCienPesos wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:45 pmThis is all business. Calhoun needs to get his staff hired and put to work. I don't like the idea of waiting until next week or longer to hire the rest of his assistants.

It does tend to work out much better for players like Great.ViAggie wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:28 pmthat only works if the coaches let you come back after entering the portal, doesn't always work out they way you wanted, some former FB players found this out the hard way a few years back. Got a big head after listening to their former HS or 7 on 7 coaches (LOL) and hit the portal only to find no takers, when they came crawling back the door was already closed and locked. I get that we have a new coach and he'll likely try and keep them, but doing this on a year when there are no coaching changes might not turn out so well.Real Life Aggie wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:25 pmGood for him; he should absolutely test the NBA waters. Hopefully we can keep him here at Utah State. But I'm a fan of him as a person regardless of where he ends up.
Speaking less as a fan and more on a personal level, if I knew anyone who was currently a D1 basketball player, I would recommend they hit the portal pretty much every year. It doesn't hurt to see what your options are. Sucks for fans and coaches, though.

That's pretty much what I'm saying. Let them go, wish them well.Yossarian wrote: ↑April 3rd, 2024, 1:37 pmJust out of curiosity, why should these athletes be given any more of a congratulations or well wishes than a regular student that decides to transfer to another school? The athletes have already had their school paid for and now get NIL money on top of that for doing absolutely nothing in return (as near as I can tell) - what more do we owe them? Yes, they wire the USU jersey and played ball, but they don't care about the school or you and me. I shrug my shoulders and move on with my life. They do the same.
